Pinewood Derby at Pink Hobo — THIS SATURDAY!

This post stolen from Local Hero Kevin Cannon at the Big Time Attic blog… note that you can still build a car for the show and bring it to the gallery to compete on Saturday.

Pink Hobo Pinewood Derby Show

I was never in Boy Scouts as a kid, but I would have considered joining had I known that they get to sit around and race cars all day. The only thing I had was Odyssey of the Mind competitions, where we had to use teamwork and teacher supervision to build a car to solve some sort of science problem. The only problem I wanted to solve was how to kick the competition’s ASS. And I wanted to do it ALONE.

That’s why the new show at Pink Hobo Gallery is so rewarding. Twenty years out of elementary school and I finally have a legitimate excuse to build and race a car. Granted, I ended up going the artsy-fartsy route and built a car with non-functioning wheels. But the rest of the cars will be racing. And there will be cheering. And screaming. And blood. Well, maybe not blood, but there will definitely be wine.

OPENING RECEPTION

PLACE: Pink Hobo Gallery
ADDRESS: 507 East Hennepin Ave, Mpls, MN
DATE: Saturday, September 19, 2009
TIME: 7pm (Race starts at 10pm)

The MCBA Has a New Website!

Our good friends at the Midwest Comic Book Association have a new website, so you’ll want to reset your links to them and update your bookmarks. For those of you not familiar with the MCBA, they are the organization that puts on our two big local, annual comic conventions in the Twin Cities, Fallcon and Microcon. Both conventions are renowned for their hospitality… the MCBA offers free table space to creators (until they run out). Additionally, they were a big sponsor of our BIG FUNNY project this year… indeed, it would not have been possible without them.

Can you believe the 21st Fallcon is in less than a month? I can’t wait!

Here’s a chicklet of the image of Kevin Cannon’s poster for Fallcon for your website, blog or social networking site…

FALLCON 21

Fallcon is also on Facebook here.

See you there!

Danno Klonowski Voted to be Featured Artist in Lutefisk Sushi Volume D!

And the winnah is… Danno Klonowski, by a nose!

The people have spoken! Danno will be the featured artist in Lutefisk Sushi Volume D (or LSD, as we like to call it), coming to Altered Esthetics next summer. Congratulations, Danno!

Thanks to all the participating artists who agreed to be nominees… any of you would have been great choices.

I’m excited we had so many people vote (36)… since everyone who voted intends to participate, it should be a very full box! Everyone, start drawing your minis… now!

Vote For Who Should Be the Featured Artist in Lutefisk Sushi Volume D

PLEASE ONLY VOTE IN THIS POLL IF YOU ARE A MINNESOTA CARTOONIST AND YOU INTEND TO PARTICIPATE IN THE LUTEFISK SUSHI VOLUME D PROJECT!

GO HERE TO VOTE

We are in the very early planning stages for the Minnesota Conspiracy’s Lutefisk Sushi Volume D project, which will be opening next Summer at Altered Esthetics gallery.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with our three previous Lutefisk Sushi shows (A B C), they have featured the work of any Minnesota cartoonists who choose to participate (we had 50 last time). The shows are focused around a limited-edition, hand-silkscreened box stuffed full of mini-comics by Minnesota artists.

Each Sushi show has also had a featured artist. We want to figure out who this will be for next year pretty quick so we can feature their work on next year’s Altered Esthetics calendar.

This poll will determine next year’s featured artist. All nominees have been suggested by people intending to participate in the Lutefisk D show … and all have been contacted & expressed willingness to participate (note: if you don’t see your suggested nominee on here, they declined).

Check out the websites of our nominees:

Jesse Gillespie
Danno Klonowski
Bob Lipski
Britt Sabo
Tim Sievert
Mike Toft

PLEASE ONLY VOTE IN THIS POLL IF YOU ARE A MINNESOTA CARTOONIST AND YOU INTEND TO PARTICIPATE IN THE LUTEFISK SUSHI VOLUME D PROJECT!

THIS POLL EXPIRES SOME TIME ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER FIRST.

An Evening With Chip Kidd
DATE & TIME: Wednesday, September 16; 7:00 p.m.. – 8:00 p.m.
LOCATION: Minneapolis College of Art and Design (Auditorium 150), 2501 Stevens Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55404.

USA Today has called him “the closest thing to a rock star” in the world of graphic design. Time selected him as one of the 100 Most Influential People of 2008. His iconic book covers—from the famous T-Rex for Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park to designs for other literati such as David Sedaris and Cormac McCarthy—have helped spawn a revolution in the art of American book packaging. Join the Minnesota Book Publishers’ Roundtable at our inaugural lecture of the 2009-2010 season, as we welcome legendary designer Chip Kidd back to the Twin Cities!

Note: this lecture will occur in the evening as opposed to our normal, lunch hour scheduling, and will be held in a new venue. Food and beverage will not be served. Seating is limited and this event is expected to sell out quickly.

City Pages Third Annual Comix Issue: The Meaning of Minnesota Nice

The third annual City Pages Comix Issue will be out today at a coffee shop near you… as usual, it features the work of many members of the Twin Cities Cartoonist Conspiracy, including the above image by Local Hero Kevin Cannon. This year’s theme is “Minnesota Nice.” Cartoons are already online for those of you who can’t wait to see it in print.

Can’t afford BIG FUNNY? Well, how about some little funny?

I just put up a gallery of photos of all the issues in the little funny sideshow, which you can see here.

little funny is an ongoing series of mini-comics boxed and sold out of an old cigarette vending machine.

The little funny set 1 box sets each contain 6 accordion-style mini-comics.

The 6 comics in a set 1 box are randomly selected from the 29 issues in the first set.

Boxes sell for $2 each.

They are only sold out of a vending machine currently housed at Altered Esthetics gallery.

They will make their premiere at the BIG FUNNY show opening this Friday, August 7th, 2009.

BIG FUNNY Reviewed on Optical Sloth, Plus Photos From the Hanging

BIG FUNNY has just been reviewed at Optical Sloth. Read it here.

It’s a remarkable achievement, and if anybody is going to be in Minneapolis on August 7th you should click that website for details on picking up a copy. If you get one there, it’s a measly $5 for this beast. If not you’ll have to pay for shipping, which just about doubles the price, but this thing is utterly unique in the comics world and worth the expense. I’m old enough to remember pulling the funnies out of the Sunday paper, spreading them out on the ground, laying down to read them and have them actually be funny.

Also… a photo preview of the show from editor and Local Hero Kevin Cannon on the Big Time Attic Blog!
