Local Comics Week UPDATE AND CHANGES!

text

Local Comics Week is a chance to show off local and independent talent.
Other cities besides Minneapolis have organized their own events
nationwide, and have even joined forces to create Indy Comic Week
(http://www.indycomicbookweek.com/index.html) which is aiming to do what we
have all set out to do with our event.

Our event is changing a bit. The Source Comics and Games in Roseville, MN
(http://www.sourcecandg.com/) is participating in Indy Comics Week and
after a few discussions with Nick, the organizer of their event, we have
decided to join forces and allow our event to be folded into Indy Comics
Week.

What does this mean? Quite a lot, actually.

Big Brain Comics is stepping out of the event, and our comics will now be
sold at the Source. Nick is also preparing for a signing event for
participating artists.

So, here is what you need to know:

-I will no longer be collecting the comics that you would like to submit
for the event. Instead, any material (mini comics, zines, trade
paperbacks, graphic novels) must be brought to the Source between December
21 and December 26th. Mind they will likely have shorter hours on
Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas. The nice thing is that the Source
WANTS to purchase your hard worked creations. How much they will purchase
items for, quantity, etc is up to the Source.

Remember, what you bring to the Source does NOT need to be new material!

-The material will be put out on the racks on Sunday December 27th and will
remain there until January 2nd.

-Wednesday, December 30th is the BIG event. The Source will be hosting a
signing for indy cartoonists. Space IS limited. In order to be a guest at
the signing, you MUST email Nick at the Source
http://www.sourcecomicsandgames.com/?page_id=10 with “Attention Nick/Indy
Comis Week in the first line of ‘your message’ to request a spot. The
signing will be 4pm until 8pm.

-You DO NOT have to provide anything to the Source to sell in order to be a
guest at the signing.

-You DO NOT have to be a guest at the Source in order to sell them your
comics.

That’s about it. If there is anything you want to know, please email me (bob(at)uptowngirlcomic.com)

MPLS jam this THURSDAY–December 3rd! Our 7th glorious year!

That’s right–The INTERNATIONAL CARTOONIST CONSPIRACY turns 7 THIS THURSDAY!!!  And just look how big it’s gotten–It’ll be a damn, unruly teen before you know it.  So come on by, do some drawing, have some cake, watch everyone cry when Zander tells us how much his comic writing class hated our pages from last month, and be sure to make your checks out to “Cash c/o Danno”.

The Minneapolis Cartoonist Conspiracy meets at 6:30 until 10:00 the first Thursday of every month at Diamond’s Coffee Shoppe in Northeast.

Generally, we draw collaborative “jam” comics, socialize and drink caffeinated beverages. Afterwords, we often have uncaffeinated beverages somewhere else.

The meetings are open to anyone who wants to draw with us, and the results are posted here sooner or later (and sometimes even printed).

Please spend some money at Diamond’s while you’re there, even if it is just a cuppa coffee… they are excellent hosts, and we wanna stay welcome there.

Announcing….LOCAL COMICS WEEK!

textDecember 27th – January 2nd will be….LOCAL COMICS WEEK!
Diamond Distribution, the biggest (and pretty much only) comics distributor will be taking a long winter’s nap that week and will not be shipping new comics…leaving comic fans without their weekly fix.
But not to worry, because as with a lot of comics, there are heroes to count on!  Those heroes,  ladies and gentlemen, are  US!
We will create and sell our own comics and provide the city with comic books and save the planet once and for all!
Here’s the plan:  Big Brain Comics has generously allowed the Conspiracy to take over their New Release racks for the week.  Customers who are looking for their weekly comics will be introduced to the world of  local comics.

Here’s the info: If you want to participate, have 20 copies of a mini comic printed by DECEMBER 3RD.  You can bring your comics to the jam that month or you can arrange to have them mailed to me by contacting me at  bob (at) uptowngirlcomic.com. The mini comic should have a cover price of $3.   Consignment details are still being worked out.

The comics will be delivered to Big Brain on December 28th
and will go on sale the next day on December 30th (new comic day!)
The comics will be on sale until January 5th.   Any money made will be able to be picked up January’s jam on the 7th.

If you want to participate, please contact me by NOVEMBER 15th.

Thanks to Kevin Cannon for creating the logo for the event!

MINNEAPOLIS JAM (and COVERED fun) THIS THURSDAY, JUNE 4th.

'archie' COVERED by alex robinson

In addition to a shorter jam this month, we will also be taking part in the http://coveredblog.blogspot.com/ project where an artist does a recreation of a comic cover. ANY comic cover, not just the “classics” like AMAZING FANTASY #15 or something.

The guidelines are pretty simple to follow if you want to submit your cover to be posted on the Covered blog (http://www.robertgoodin.com/submission.html).

Bring one(or more) of your favorite covers to redo, or to share with the group (yes, everyone gets their comics back).  Other comics will be there to parooze as well if you forget to bring one.  11×17 paper will also be provided, but feel free to bring any kind of drawing surface you prefer.

Guide to Pimping the Conspiracy at Fallcon

Fallcon is almost here. It’s that magical time of year in the Twin Cities where you can meet all of your favorite local cartoonists and promote your comics. It’s also a good time to plug the Cartoonist Conspiracy and help it grow! Here are some good ways to promote the Conspiracy at Fallcon:

Ask people if they like to draw – This is a great conversation starter because it indicates that you are not trying to sell them something (at least at the moment). If the person likes to draw, let them know about our jam sessions in Minneapolis (First Thursday at 6:30) and Saint Paul (Third Thursday at 6:30). If they don’t like to draw, odds are they have an artist friend who might be interested. Hand out flyers, and don’t forget to mention the upcoming 24-hour comic day!

Tell them about past Conspiracy Projects – The Lutefisk Sushi boxes are great attention-getters. At Microcon people would stop and stare at them, saying, “Lutefisk Sushi? Really?” Exploit their captured attention by telling them what Lutefish Sushi is all about! If they’re still paying attention, you can also tell them about the Eric Lappegard tribute book Alley Cats and the 24 Hour Comic Day box sets.

Hand them a copy of “How to Make Minicomics” – This is a great little manual on what minicomics are all about! You can find a pdf of the comic here. I will be assembling a bunch of these for Fallcon, so stop by my table and pick up a few.

Show your Conspiracy love with style – Wear an official Cartoonist Conspiracy Fez! E-mail Steve Stwally for details at .  Also, feel free to wear any Lutefisk Sushi, Vegan Ninja, or other Conspiracy-related apparel you may have.

Volunteer at the Conspiracy Lounge – We need YOU! See this post for more details.
