Lutefisk Sushi Art-A-Whirl Fun this Weekend
If you haven’t seen the Lutefisk Sushi Volume C show in Minneapolis yet, this weekend (May 16-18) is a great time to do so. It’s Art-A-Whirl weekend, the biggest art event of the year in Nordeast Minneapolis!
We have some special events this weekend:
Friday night we have My Art School Summer, a feature length animated cartoon made by David and Mary Sandberg. It is showing for free at 8:30 Friday night at Altered Esthetics… if you miss it there you can catch it at The Ritz at 2:00 on Saturday. Note that this cartoon is very much adults-only, and if you are under 18, we’ll have to give you the boot when it starts.
Saturday afternoon, the fantastic Roe Family Singers (who also were nice enough to play at the opening) will be playing from 3:00-5:00 or so.
Many of the artists in the show will be hanging out, drawing and socializing throughout the weekend. There will be jam comics that anyone can participate in. People will also have the opportunity to create animations for the zoetrope Ken Avidor made for the show.
Participating artists will be stopping by at random throughout the weekend, but in addition to that, you can come and meet some of them at specific times, if you’re inclined:

The word “cartoonist†tends not to be associated with fine art, instead evoking Saturday-morning buffoonery, and not much else. The word “illustrators†might be more respectable, but in this case it would be completely off the mark: the creations on display Friday night romped through a range of visual and narrative styles and subject matter, brimming with creativity and skill.

CONvergence Needs Cartoonist Panelists
CONvergence (July 3-6), an enormous annual Twin Cities science-fiction, comics and gaming convention is looking for folks who want to be panelists on some of their panels. They’ve got some great comics guests this year… one of their guests of honor is the wonderful Mark Evanier, who, in addition to being co-creator of the hilarious series Groo the Wanderer, has one of the best comics and entertainment blogs around. Information on how to contact them to potentially participate in a panel can be seen below. Here is an email I received requesting our assistance:

Lutefisk Sushi Opening Wrap (Maki?)
The Lutefisk Sushi Volume C opening was pretty amazing… the art was fantastic, the gallery was packed like a tin of sardines for hours, and I suspect a fun time was had by all who attended.
If you missed the opening (and The Onion had the date wrong, so I’m guessing many did)… don’t fret! There are still boxes left at this point (although they are going fast… the box is limited to 150 copies). The show will be up all month, with some special events during Art-A-Whirl (May 16-18). Regular gallery hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays 1-7, Saturdays 1-5. Art-A Whirl hours are 5-10PM Friday May 16th, 12-8PM Saturday May 17th, and 12-5PM Saturday May 18th.

Friday was apparently the most profitable evening Altered Esthetics has ever had, so congratulations to all participants on the good work. We don’t really emphasize where the money goes from the bento boxes, but this time around it is going to support Altered Esthetics, which is a fantastic non-profit, community gallery.

Tonight’s opening Lutefisk Sushi Show is mentioned in today’s Pioneer Press. Also, the Vita.mn article mentioned yesterday is now in the Star Tribune. We are a front page event pick on the new Metromix site, where I mentioned we will be featured with video footage in the near future… I’ll post here when it oes up. We are also mentioned in this week’s Minneapolis edition of The Onion in the AV section, although I haven’t seen it yet.
