At our most recent SFCC meeting, we created a series of cartoons that were inspired by the popular “Fail” meme. This was a great challenge and everyone seemed to enjoy the challenge. You can see all of our fail comics in this flickr set.
I ACTUALLY REMEMBERED!!!
HEY!
I just remembered!
In addition to doing pointless film reviews no one but Steinlicht reads,
I’m also supposed to remind citizens of the Minneapolis/St Paul area that our
MONTHLY JAM MEETING IS THURSDAY!!!!!
This month we’ll be doing a jam on the topic of “MINNEAPOLIS vs. ST PAUL”,
which will then be displayed in April at ALTERED ESTHETICS(the same fine gallery
which will host our LUTEFISK SUSHI ‘C’ show in May!).
Also, the original multi-pieced “EVIL EYE #1” will be there for–hopefully–a unified re-rendering of this modern classic.
The Minneapolis Cartoonist Conspiracy meets at 6:30 until 10:00 the first Thursday of every month at Diamond’s Coffee Shoppe in Northeast.
Generally, we draw collaborative “jam” comics, socialize and drink caffeinated beverages.
Afterwards, we often(sometimes) have uncaffeinated beverages somewhere else.
The meetings are open to anyone who wants to draw with us, and the results are posted on our website sooner or later(later) and sometimes even printed(…well…).
Diamond’s Coffee Shoppe
1618 Central Avenue Northeast Minneapolis, Minnesota
In the back hallway.
If there are D&D nerds there they spook easily so tell’em to skeedaddle.
Please spend some money at Diamond’s while you’re there, even if it is just a cuppa coffee… they are excellent hosts, and we wanna stay welcome there.
Big Time Attic is now officially hosting our monthly jam meetings at Diamond’s… they will be supplying us with a big old plate of pastries or something each month. Thanks fellas!
See you Thursday!
Don’t Do What "DONNIE DON’T" Does…
Quick reviews from the world of second-run theatres and bootleg DVD screeners….
BEOWULF–
Robert “Special Effects” Zemekis brings us an age-old tale of men and mosters and a Barbie doll with high-heels that LITERALLY comes out of its heels. OH! And it has Angelina Jolies head. (Cause who’s second on the list after Barbie for “unreal expectations of self-image for little girls”?)
Honestly, I dont know that I can properly review this movie since it was made for a 3-D IMAX screen. I saw it at the Roseville 4 dollar theatre which offered neither 3D glasses, nor does it have an IMAX screen (which lead to a good 1/3rd of the movies action taking place with the HEADS OF THE CHARACTERS CUT OFF!!!).
I will say this—John Malkovich should NEVER be let within 500 miles of film shoot EVER AGAIN!
JUNO–
Whats more fun than teen pregnancy?
NOTHING!
You’ve earned that little golden oscar nod, Diablo.
The Christian right thanks you more than you’ll ever know.

The top image is just a digital mock-up of the box. The REAL DEAL will be printed by our friends at Puny Entertainment.
And no, I haven’t seen Cloverfield, but this image MAY have been influenced by Danno’s review of said film.
Frank Cartoons
Jim Woodring’s Frank the Cat comes to life from a collection of animated shorts from some talented folks in Japan. (via Cartoon Brew) It’s always fun to see how others interpret someones art through animation.
VISIONS OF FRANK collects 8 wild Frank animations made by some of Japan’s most innovative and idiosyncratic filmmakers: Taruto Fuyama, Eri Yoshimura, art unit COCOA,DROP INC., Masaki Naito,Kanako Kawaguchi, Naomi Nagata. Each piece is an interpretation of a classic Frank comic and is scored by musicians from Japan and the USA. The films run the gamut of animation techniques: 3DCG, paper craft, clay, iron sand and traditional cel 2D. These original and imaginative expressions present anew the world of JW as seen through each filmmaker’s eyes. For each animation, you are able to choose between the original music and the newly composed music by other musicians. Participating musicians include James McNew (from Yo La Tengo), The Coctails, Dame Darcy, Kicell, Milk Yabe, and others. Comes with 16-page booklet with a reprinted Frank comic and introductions to the animators and musicians. As a bonus Woodring’s own animated WHIM-GRINDER is included, with a live soundtrack composed and recorded by Bill Frisell at a performance of Mysterio Simpatico.
I think it would be cool to have someone animate my characters, what do you guys think?
The Cartoonist Conspiracy Invades Italy
The Cartoonist Conspiracy just got its first foothold in Europe… the Aviano Cartoonist Conspiracy (Aviano Air Base, Italy)! Benvenuto! Può il vostro flusso dell’inchiostro come un fiume. Hopefully that means what babelfish says it does!
The opening reception for the Sunday Comix exhibit, “Komics @ Kerouac,” will be held at (where else?) the Kafé Kerouac (just a few blocks north of Lane Ave.) this Friday, Feb 1 from 7-11p. You can meet the artists, look at their art up close, watch those cartooning fools create a live Comix Jam before your very eyes or just ignore the whole damn thing and get yourself a nice cup of Toni Morrison or Franz Kafka. Free food will be available as well as plenty of beer and booze. (They carry the full line of Great Lakes Beers and they are the only Bar in Columbus that recycles all their Bottles and Cans!)
“Komics @ Kerouac” will feature the framed art work of Matt & Ellen Wyatt, Ray Tomczak,
Kafé Kerouac is located at 2250 N. High St. in Columbus, hours are Mon-Fri, 8am to 11pm, Sat, 10am to 11pm, and Sun, Noon to 10pm.
Creig Flessel at the Cartoon Art Museum starting February 2nd,2008

The Cartoon Art Museum is honored to celebrate the life and work of cartoonist Creig Flessel with a special exhibition opening on Flessel’s 96th birthday, February 2, 2008. The exhibition will include over 30 examples from Flessel’s long creative career, including original comic book artwork from the 1930s, newspaper advertisements from the 1950s, comic strips from the 1960s, Playboy cartoons from the 1980s and recent commissioned artwork from the 1990s onward.
Mr. Flessel created both the Sandman as well as the Shining Knight who are still part of the DC Comics Universe. The San Francisco Chronicle has a list of 11 things about the artist HERE.
Mr. Flessel is still doing art as well, check out this nice drawing he did for the late cartoonist Phil Frank when he was in the hospital. If I can only be so lucky to create art half as good when I am 96 years old.
super awesome last minute ghost explosion

So, I found a space to show some of the comicbook inspired work that i’ve been creating lately. It’s really unofficial and last minute, but the art will be there! As well as food and booze available at the cafe bar. It’s really a nice place, so there’s a chance that my work will be up for a very limited amount of time, if you know what I mean. So come on by. There might be a band playing abstract jazz things. Maybe not. Embrace the chaos. San Francisco! Yes!
Cheers!
