Raise a Glass to The Vegan Ninja October 24th at Grumpy’s Downtown

This is a repost/reminder… note that it is right next door to the Porcellino/Sally book release at Big Brain the same night!

October 22nd is our dear, departed comrade Eric Lappegard’s (AKA The Vegan Ninja’s) birthday… come raise a drink to him and celebrate his life at Grumpy’s October 24th. Some of Eric’s family will be there from South Dakota, and would love to see as many people as can make it, even if they can only stop by for a short time.

7pm Saturday October 24th at GRUMPY’S DOWNTOWN 1111 Washington Ave. S. Minneapolis, MN

Reminder! Come Remember the Vegan Ninja this Saturday, August 9th!

It is hard to believe almost a year has passed since the Vegan Ninja, Eric Lappegard, left the planet. Please come and raise a drink or three to his memory with us August 9th at Grumpy’s downtown (1111 Washington Ave. S. Minneapolis, MN), and do take some time to revisit his wonderful comics. Below is an open invite from Eric’s family.

Hello to everyone,

I can’t believe a year has gone by. We think about Eric everyday and have decided that we would like to have a get together with his friends to remember him. We would like to get together with as many of his friends that can make it on Saturday August 9th. We have reserved the party room at Grumpy’s downtown that evening starting at 7:30 pm. We hope that you can make it and if you know of anyone I may have missed please pass the word around. We want it to be a fun time remembering Eric and in the way that he would have enjoyed. Hope to see you there.

Pre-Order Yourself an Alley Cat

We’re taking pre-orders this Friday (today) only for the Alley Cat anthology we’re putting out soon, featuring 92 pages of work by 50 cartoonists honoring our fallen comrade Eric Lappegard, who recently died from complications following an auto accident… they will be available at the Schmapples Tribute event September 8th, and will probably be pretty hard to come by after that. You can get all the details here. If you like cats, bikes, and/or ninjas you won’t want to miss it. Funds sent will go towards printing more copies of the anthology, which we would really like to do, and all proceeds from the book will go to the family of Eric Lappegard.

Minneapolis / St. Paul—Beloved local comic artist and bicycle advocate Eric Lappegard passed away on July 23rd from complications following an automobile accident. Eric was in the process of moving from Minneapolis to Portland, Oregon, when the accident occurred. Originally from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Eric had spent the last number of years in Minneapolis, where he worked as a bicycle messenger and coffee shop java-slinger, artist, community organizer and bicycle advocate.

Eric (a.k.a. Schmapples, a.k.a. Vegan Ninja) was an active member of the local comics collective The International Cartoonist Conspiracy, as well as a founding member of The Minneapolis Bicycle Federation, a group that advocates for a better cycling environment. Eric was a friendly face around town, a vegan who championed animal rights and environmental sustainability, and a friend to many people across the community. He will be greatly missed.

On Saturday, September 8th, friends of Eric are partnering with local businesses and arts organizations to pay tribute to a dear friend and important member of the art, music, and bicycling communities. All proceeds from the event will go to Eric’s family to aid them with expenses incurred as a result of this tragic accident.

The Schmapples Tribute event will include a messenger-style alley cat bike race beginning at Behind Bars Bicycle Shop in Northeast Minneapolis.

Eric’s artwork, as well as donated artwork from local artists & members of the Cartoonist Conspiracy (cartoonistconspiracy.com), will be on display at Altered Esthetics (alteredesthetics.com) all day Saturday, with a silent auction and reception to begin at 5:00pm. Two original publications have been created specifically for this event & will be on sale; a collection of Eric’s Schmapples comics, and a huge anthology by over 50 cartoonists. Additional items for auction will be included, including gift certificates and highly-desirable items from local bicycle, comic and other businesses. Raffle tickets will be purchased for $5 each. Prizes include artwork, comics, gift certificates and custom bicycle parts and products. A vegan bake sale will also help to raise funds for the Lappegard family. Live music will be provided by the Roe Family Singers.

the WEEKEND–a PERFECT TIME to work on your ERIC TRIBUTE!

The deadline is fast approaching—August 15th— to participate in the Alley Cat anthology to benefit Eric Lappegard.
This deadline is unfortunately pretty rigid, since we need the time to get the book printed.
If we get your artwork after the 15th, it will still be in the gallery show & sold via silent auction, but it will not be included in the anthology.
Please frame your own art, if possible… thrift stores work great for finding cheap frames. A frame will be provided if you cannot get one, but we’d certainly appreciate you getting your own.
Also, the fellas at Big Time Attic are at the Chicago Comicon until Monday, so you will want to wait until then to drop off your artwork.
Thanks much to all of you for participating.
Here is the info again about the anthology.
We don’t yet have a press release for the larger event (which will include a bike race and a music event), but here is a very rough one for the gallery part of the event:
Alley Cat Art Benefit at Altered Esthetics Opening 5-8PM September 8th
Altered Esthetics and The International Cartoonist Conspiracy have organized an evening of cartoon wonderments for your amusement and illumination, featuring the work of over 40 cartoonists! All sales will go directly to benefit the family of cartoonist Eric Lappegard, who died in July due to complications from a car accident.
The event will include:
The release of Alley Cat , and anthology collecting comics about cats, bikes and ninjas… a limited edition created and printed specifically for this event.
The release of Schmapples by Eric Lappegard, a complete collection of his wonderful online strip, which can be viewed at ericlappegard.com.
A wide variety of original art (including most of the artwork from the Alley Cat anthology) and prints will be sold via silent auction… with bids starting at $20 or less. It should be a great opportunity to get some wonderful artwork at very affordable prices.
Music at Altered Esthetics will be provided by The Roe Family Singers.
