The Orphan Works Bill

There is an interesting discussion on the Orphan Works Bill on the Comics Journal message board here.

There Matt Feazell points to a link where you can read the full text of the bill. I have read so much information and misinformation about this bill it is nice to actually be able to read it for myself.

I encourage you all to go read the actual bill (which isn’t all that long) and form your own opinion about it.

VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED FOR FALLCON 2008!

Well! Response so far has been nothing short of… pathetic! Help! Please! Your Conspiracy needs you!

Thanks much to stand-up guys Dan Olson, Ryan Dow, Matt Kriske, Bud Burgy, Zander Cannon and Scott Gallatin for letting me know they can help out… I assume there are a lot more of you out there who plan to help and haven’t let me know. Please do, as I need to make sure we are covered for the whole convention, ideally with at least 3 people at all times. Volunteer for as little as an hour or as much as two days! Here is the info again…

The Conspiracy is organizing a lounge again for FallCon this year, and we need volunteers to help run it. Note that if you are not a guest at FallCon, you can still volunteer, and if you are a guest at FallCon and have your own table, you can still volunteer (we’ll have signs you can leave at your table during your time spent in the lounge). You can volunteer for as little as a couple hours or as much as the whole weekend.

To volunteer, drop me a line at:

When you email me, please also let me know what hours you want to volunteer for. We are looking for volunteers the evening of Friday October 3rd (for set up), 9AM-5PM Saturday October 4th, and 10AM-6PM October 5th.

You can also email me with any further questions, or, better yet, ask them in the comments so others can benefit from them.

As with last year the focus will be on hanging out, meeting folks, drawing jam comics, shooting the poop, talking Conspiracy, and reading funny books. We will also be hosting a mini-comics station where people will be able to create and print their own mini-comics live for free… the MNCBA will be providing a copier, and I’m hoping to have a sponsor for supplies as well.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE: In addition to volunteers for time, we also need some folks who are willing to loan us and haul some furnishings for the lounge… couches needed in particular! Other items: comfy chairs, rugs, bars, tables, coffee tables, drawing tables, loungy decorations, etc.

Thanks!

Submit Your Minis to the 2008 Isotope Award for Excellence in Mini-Comics

PRESS RELEASE
Submissions Open for the 2008 Isotope Award for Excellence in Mini-Comics

SAN FRANCISCO (September 10th, 2008) San Francisco comics retailer James Sime, proprietor of Isotope – the comic book lounge, announced today that submissions for the 2008 Isotope Award for Excellence in Mini-Comics will be accepted until October 24th at midnight. “There is honestly nothing that makes me happier each year than to get the opportunity to help spotlight a creator who is toiling in the underground making something wonderful,” said Sime, “And I know that many of you out there are hand-crafting some mini-comics brilliance, let us help share that work with the world!”

The Isotope Award for Excellence in Mini-Comics has been the first step in launching the careers of previous award-winners including Eisner-nominated Josh Cotter (SKYSCRAPERS OF THE MIDWEST) and Danica Novgorodoff (SLOW STORM), as well as, Daniel Merlin Goodbrey (THE LAST SANE COWBOY), Rob Osborne (1000 STEPS TO WORLD DOMINATION), and Max Riffner (QUICK STEP).

The five judges for the Isotope Award represent various aspects of the comic industry including creators, retailers, and press. This year’s judges are:

Josh Cotter – 2004 winner of the Isotope Award for his mini-comic, SKYSCRAPERS OF THE MIDWEST. This Eisner-nominated series has recently been collected in a beautiful hardcover edition by AdHouse Books.

Jason McNamara – Xeric award winning author of FIRST MOON, CONTINUITY, and the recently-released THE MARTIAN CONFEDERACY.

Johanna Draper Carlson – Publishers Weekly writer, and the brilliant mind behind Comics Worth Reading. Johanna’s open-minded reviews and enthusiastic reporting set the bar for commentary throughout the industry.

Kirsten Baldock – The Isotope’s Special Projects Director. Kirsten is also a librarian, bartender, and the author of the SMOKE AND GUNS graphic novel.

James Sime – Proprietor of Isotope – the comic book lounge in San Francisco.

To enter this competition, send five copies of your mini-comic to Isotope’s address (326 Fell St. San Francisco, CA 94102) before October 24th deadline. The award will be given out at the grand ceremony during APE AFTERMATH at the Isotope in conjunction with San Francisco’s ALTERNATIVE PRESS EXPO. Because of the nature of this award, the winner will be contacted in advance and must be present at the Isotope at 9 PM on Saturday, November 1st for the award presentation ceremony.

For more information contact the Isotope at (415) 621-6543 or at isotopeaward at gmail.com

JAM TONIGHT IN MINNEAPOLIS! (Thursday September 4th)

The Minneapolis Cartoonist Conspiracy meets at 6:30 until 10:00 the first Thursday of every month at Diamond’s Coffee Shoppe in Northeast.

Generally, we draw collaborative “jam” comics, socialize and drink caffeinated beverages. Afterwords, we often have uncaffeinated beverages somewhere else.

The meetings are open to anyone who wants to draw with us, and the results are posted here sooner or later (and sometimes even printed).

CALL AND ANSWER: Andy Singer’s Exhibition

Conspirator Andy Singer has a show of his cartoons up in St. Paul at the Black Dog Cafe along with another excellent looking show of Minnesota poster artists, coinciding conveniently with the Republican National Convention. Here is what Andy has to say about it…

Dear Friends, Editors, Acquaintances, fellow humanoids,

I currently have a show of over 40 cartoons at the Black Dog Cafe and Wine Bar in downtown Saint Paul–
http://www.blackdogstpaul.com/events/news-73.shtml

I am sharing the space with the Minneapolis Poster Offensive who is exhibiting 30 of its posters in the other half of the space–
http://www.blackdogstpaul.com/events/news-13.shtml

The show(s) will be up through the RNC convention, probably until mid September.

There will be a reception for both of us on Friday evening, August 29th, from 5pm until we all fall down. I will be selling original cartoons, books, and maybe my soul. Come check it out!

For some photos of the show as I set it up, see–

Please forward or post this event anywhere that people might see it.

Thanks,

Andy Singer

PUNY “30% More Commercial” Gallery Show this Saturday!

Our good friends at Puny Entertainment have a gallery show called 30% More Commercial opening at First Amendment Gallery this Saturday… here is the info:

“Best known for their animation on Emmy Nominated TV Series “Yo Gabba Gabba” and high-end interactive development; PUNY’s twenty-two artists, designers, and programmers throw shit against a wall to see what sticks. For one night only their corporate overseers allowed non-billable hours to be put towards un-artdirected art, interactive pointlessness, and animated mash-ups. On display are secret passions, resume killers, and a clear bias against race, gender, and economic backgrounds..

Is it art or a capabilities pitch? We’re not sure they know the difference. Salary DOE.”

24 HOUR COMICS DAY 2008, MINNEAPOLIS

Mark your calendars for Minneapolis’ fifth annual “24 Hour Comics Day” event. The details are as follows:
24 HOUR COMICS DAY
Saturday October 18, 2008 – Sunday October 19, 2008
10am – 10am

Bring food to share, and art materials for yourself (but know that Wet Paint will have a booth set up so you can buy all your stuff there if you want!)

For all the latest info, check out 24-hourcomic.blogspot.com

To register, email your name, email address and phone number to us at mpls24hourcomicday at yahoo.com. You can also ask questions there, but we would prefer if you did it in the comments for this post, as it will hopefully answer other people with the same question!

We will be making another box set collecting comics from this year’s event. We hope all event participants will want to participate in this as well. Everyone contributing a mini-comic to the box will get a copy of the box. In previous years we have made 100 of these… this year there will be less… the number is tbd, based on the number of participants.

Help spread the word by posting/printing/emailing the fantastic poster by Kevin Cannon (who may hold the world record for most 24 hour comics drawn)! Choose from:

400 px wide (blog-friendly)
800 px wide
1600 px wide (cartoon is readable at this size)
hi-res black (good for printing)

Thanks much to our sponsors at Big Brain Comics, Big Time Attic, the Minnesota Center for Book Arts, and Wet Paint!
