AUTOPTIC is pleased to announce its partnership with the International experimental comics laboratory/residency Pierre Feuille Ciseaux (or PFC)!
PFC (“Pierre Feuille Ciseauxâ€, or “Rock Paper Scissors†in French) is an experimental comics laboratory formerly held on the grounds of a 17th century salt factory (Saline Royale, Arc et Senans) in rural France. Beginning with its first incarnation in 2009, PFC has brought an international group of cartoonists, illustrators, printmakers and artists together for one week, with no distractions. The artists live, eat, sleep and work together with one sole focus: to create new work in a collaborative setting. The primary purpose of the residency is to explore and invent new ideas about the Comic Art form (“Bande Dessinée†in French) through collaboration (often across language barriers) and experimentation (using the French experimental tradition of “OuBaPo†restrictions as a catalyst). On the final day, the results of the week’s collective work are displayed in a gallery setting, and the public is invited to interact with the artists in the form of workshops and public talks. For this, the first North American edition of the PFC, its originators, June Misserey and members of Association ChiFouMi, will be coming to the U.S. to co-lead PFC 4 with Barbara Schulz, head of the Comic Art Department at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Zak Sally (cartoonist and US liaison to the PFC), and cartoonist Anders Nilsen. Featuring a group of ten North American comics authors as well as 6 artists from France and Belgium, the week-long comics laboratory will be held in association with and hosted by MCAD, where the artists will live and work for the duration of the residency.
An exhibition of the week’s work will be presented to the public on August 17th, in MCAD‘s Concourse Gallery. All of the artists listed below will be in attendance at AUTOPTIC. Confirmed artists include:

The Minneapolis Cartoonist Conspiracy meets at 6:30 until 10:00 the first Thursday of every month at Diamond’s Coffee Shoppe in Northeast.
Generally, we draw collaborative “jam†comics, socialize and drink caffeinated beverages. Afterwords, we often have uncaffeinated beverages somewhere else.
The meetings are open to anyone who wants to draw with us, and the results are posted here sooner or later (and sometimes even printed).

For the last few months, I have been lucky enough to work on Cartozia Tales, an awesome new indy comics project.
Cartozia is a quirky fantasy world created collaboratively by a group of cartoonists with runaway imaginations. Each issue will contain 9 all-ages stories set in different sectors of a map (see below; art by Sarah Becan). You can read more about the process and the contributors at cartozia.com.
Cartoonists in a Cave at Northern Spark 2013 (June 8th)
We’ve been invited by our friends at Rain Taxi to participate in their wonderful Analog Cave project at the Northern Spark festival coming up on June 8th. Participating cartoonists will be drawing interpretations of writings provided by strangers submitted thru a mail slot, which will then be projected, put online, printed and/or otherwise displayed.
So you can be included in the promotional materials, we need to know in advance if you want to participate and what time slots you want to be there for (which can be as short as a few hours or as long as all night from 6PM to 9AM). Rain Taxi and mnartists.org join forces to create a writer’s dream at Northern Spark, the third annual all-night art fest!
Analog Cave combines the tactile intimacy of a handwritten letter with the fleeting immediacy of social media. Throughout Northern Spark, mnartists.org and Rain Taxi Review of Books invite the public to enter our decked-out Imaginarium for a moment of private reflection and contribute a short text or illustration through a variety of analog tools and processes. The crowd-sourced content will undergo a real-time editorial process which will convert the entries into filmic projections, printed objects, drawn posters, or other public displays—all viewable from Bedlam’s street-side window in Lowertown. The goal of the project is to create a platform for thoughtful, slowed-down messages which leave behind a physical object.

25th Anniversary Springcon is this weekend! (May 18th & 19th)
Springcon, the biggest comic book convention in Minnesota is this weekend! Our incredibly generous friends at the Midwest Comic Book Association have given free table space to over 250 cartoonists this year! It is always a fantastically fun and friendly time… I hope to see you there!

Come on down to the open studio on Saturday, May 11, at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Meet, talk, and draw with a few of your fellow cartoonists. We’ll be at the flexi-space (low tables).
The coffee shop will be open. There are outlets for your devices, plus coffee-shop wi-fi.
There is free parking in the MCBA lot immediately east of the building. If the lot is full, go to the metered street parking on 3rd Street (one block south of Washington Ave.) for 25 cents an hour, or to the higher-priced meters on the other streets. Or, walk or ride your bike.
This is an open studio — all are welcome. Feel free to hang out, draw, or whatever.
