The 700 Underwear Clad Vigilante Mutants Project

We’ve previously mentioned the 700 Hobos Project on a few occasions. ApeLad, by far the most prolific drawer of hobos (and also one of the best) recently completed his interpretations of all 700 of John Hodgman’s 700 hobos (plus change). Without missing a beat, he announced the new 700 Underwear Clad Vigilante Mutants project. I’ll definitely be participating. This time the names are all user submitted… they have 640 at the time of this post. Then the drawing begins!

In addition, a 700 Bunnies Project just popped up. I’ll probably start a 700 Gangsters project when the Vigilante Mutants comes to an end, unless someone beats me to it.

Help the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund by Surfing the Web

I recently found out about the search engine goodsearch.com, which donates a penny for every search you make to the charity of your choice. This is an easy way for comics enthusiasts to help out the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. The search engine is powered by yahoo, so it should work pretty well. Here’s a news video about it.

You can see on the site how much has been raised so far for the charity of your choice… so far, in the history of the search engine, a total of $1.89 has been raised for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. We can do a lot better than that. Get searching! I just made them four cents!

Obviously, one person doesn’t make a ton of difference doing this, but an organized effort definitely can. The above video mentions one charity that made over 2 grand.

Unfortunately for the Fantagraphics Legal Defense Fund, only non-profits can earn money from goodsearch… otherwise I’d suggest searching for them, since the CBLDF has unfortunately decided not to assist them with their current legal troubles. However, you can still do yourself a favor and support Fantagraphics by buying some of their numerous excellent books!

Date Set For 24 Hour Comics Day This Year

As most of you already know, the date for 24 Hour Comics Day changes from year to year. This year it will be October 20th. Read more on the 24 Hour Comics Day Blog.

I picked this date after consulting with the hosts of the 2006 events. While there is certainly nothing they all agreed on, they were generally happier with a fall date for the event, and generally happy with this particular date.

The next step is to start signing up hosts. We’ve already started to hear from people who wanted to host events in countries that have not had events in the past, so there’s a very good chance that this year will once again be bigger. However, we resisted officially taking any sign-ups before now. We’re ready — go to http://www.24hourcomics.com/2007/hostfaq.html to see what hosts are required to agree to, and fill out the form there if you agree to it all (there’s an email address there if you have relevant questions.)

The step after this will be to try to organize some of those hosts into also taking care of some of the behind-the-scenes aspect of running this event. I think there’s a lot of growth left in this thing, but we’re reaching the limits of my competencies in a lot of aspects. And besides, I’d really like to participate in the Day, if not this year then in 2008.

Anyway, set Saturday, October 20, 2007 aside on your calendar. You won’t get much sleep, but you’ll get a lot done.

Cartoonist Conspiracy Website Updates

In addition to the recent addition of numerous useful site feeds you can subscribe to on the site, I’ve recently made a number of other major improvements.

  • I switched the Cartoonist Conspiracy Events and Conspire! Cartooning Gig Deadline feeds to be Google Calendars, which are intuitive and easy to use. They are in the sidebar of the blog, as well on their own pages at the previous links.
  • I upgraded the message board to the latest version and got some help from conspirator Jeff Faust to hopefully fend off the spam robots. Thanks Jeff! Hopefully we will no longer be a good resource for links to porn, pharmaceuticals and malware.
  • I split many of the feeds in the side nav of the blog out to their own pages (they are still in the side nav as well) to make them easier to browse. I mentioned the events and cartooning gig pages… there is also a news page that puts the Conspiracy News, Conspirators and Comics News feeds in one place.
  • I altered and simplified the header to the site.
  • I added tags to a number of the old blog posts from before we had a tagging system.

I also wanted to note some cool opportunites for conspirators to promote themselves and their local cell:

1) Any conspirator with an RSS feed can be added to the Conspire! Conspirators feed… just contact me with the feed info and I’ll get you added.

2) If you are helping manage a cell or starting a new cell, I can get you set up to add events to our calendar, and to blog on our Conspire! group blog (i.e. what you are reading right now). Again, contact me and I’ll get you added.

Come Jam In Minneapolis Thursday March First!

The Minneapolis Cartoonist Conspiracy meets at 6:30 until 10:00 the first Thursday of every month at Diamond’s Coffee Shoppe in Northeast.

Generally, we draw collaborative “jam” comics, socialize and drink caffeinated beverages. Afterwords, we often have uncaffeinated beverages somewhere else.

The meetings are open to anyone who wants to draw with us, and the results are posted here sooner or later (and sometimes even printed).

Diamond’s Coffee Shoppe
1618 Central Avenue Northeast
Minneapolis, Minnesota

Bus info here.

Please spend some money at Diamond’s while you’re there, even if it is just a cuppa coffee… they are excellent hosts, and we wanna stay welcome there.

Big Time Attic is now officially hosting our monthly jam meetings at Diamond’s… they will be supplying us with a big old plate of pastries or something each month. Thanks fellas!
