Scott McCloud in Albuquerque

Wednesday, July 18 | 7:00 pm | The Art Center Design College | 5000 Marble St NE | Albuquerque, NM

Comics are changing fast, both in the kinds of stories they tell, and how their creators tell them. Thanks to the graphic novel movement, the manga invasion and the growth of webcomics, the story of comics in America is more exciting and unpredictable than ever.

As a part of the 50-state tour for Making Comics, author and comics artist Scott McCloud will be stopping in Albuquerque to put all these trends into perspective in a fast-moving visual presentation at The Art Center Design College (map).

Presented by 7000 BC, North Fourth Art Center, and The Art Center Design College.

Tickets are $10 ($8 for students), available at the door.

Minnesota State Fair Fine Arts Competition

Daniel Olson asked me to pass this on to y’all, so here it is… thanks Daniel!

Steve –

I know this is a bit late, but I was wondering if you’d be able to pass the
word along via the Cartoonist Conspiracy website about the Minnesota State
Fair Fine Arts Competition.

For anyone interested, the deadline for registering in the Minnesota State
Fair Fine Arts Competition is Monday, July 9th, 2007 11:59 PM. It is open to
ALL Minnesota artists regardless of age. Fortunately, you don’t need to know
what the dimensions of your art is going to be. Instead, you just need to
inform the committee what type of medium you’ll be using. The complete set of
rules are listed on the website, please read them carefully before
submitting an application. Also, if you register, you don’t necessarily have
to enter anything into the competition, although it would probably look bad
if you didn’t. However, you can’t enter anything without registering, so
please register by Monday, July 9th if you want to enter any artwork.

Jam in Minneapolis Tonight, July 5th

The Minneapolis Cartoonist Conspiracy meets at 6:30 until 10:00 the first Thursday of every month at Diamond’s Coffee Shoppe in Northeast.

Generally, we draw collaborative “jam” comics, socialize and drink caffeinated beverages. Afterwards, we often have uncaffeinated beverages somewhere else. This month, people will also be working on submissions for the City Pages “True Tales of the Twin Cities” feature and dropping off submissions they have created over the last week or so. You can read more about that on the blog at these links:

The meetings are open to anyone who wants to draw with us, and the results are posted here sooner or later (and sometimes even printed).

San Francisco Jam this Thursday June 28, 2007

OK folks, time for all those cartoonist in the Bay Area to come on out and make comics! With easy access from public transportation, the jam at the Muddy Waters/Church St. Café is a great way to come together and create!

Just check out our awesome flyer designed by Mike Hales:

We’ll be finishing up the Bunnies vs. Robot story and starting a new comic tale. We’ll also be challenging ourself to ink Jack Kirby’s Thor as Doc Popular has done.

To get to the jam by way of public transportation:

From BART outside of SF:

Take BART into San Francisco getting off at one of the first four down town stations (Embarcadero, Montgomery, Powell, or Civic Center). You can get a MUNI $.25 discount coupon before exiting the station. Then you can take…

Underground MUNI OUTBOUND lines L,M,K,or T to Church St. Or you can also take the OUTBOUND J line and get off at Church and Market (by the big Safeway right after you emerge from the underground). Muddy Waters/Church St. Café are about a block away.

NOTE: The Church St. Station closes early at 9pm. Check with 511.org for exact details.

OR take the F line that runs along Market St. going away from the embarcadero plaza. Get off at the stop where Market and Church cross.

A Couple More Things on the City Pages Opportunity

2 more items on the City Pages opportunity:

  • I confirmed that in addition to the previously mentioned half page sizes, quarter page sizes are also acceptable…9.75″ wide by 3″ tall. Again, you’ll want to leave a quarter inch at the top for the header they are going to put on it, so your working space would really be 9.75″ wide by 2.75″ tall.
  • I also confirmed that 300DPI is acceptable for scanning in greyscale. I would do 800DPI if you are scanning black and white.

At this point we have 20 artists who are planning on participating, and 3 more who are hoping to if they can find the time… and you could too! Let me know if you’re planning on it.
