The opening party is October 3rd. It costs $10 to get in to the opening ($5 if you are a member or student), but is free if you visit another time. For the opening there is a members preview from 7-8PM, and then it is open to the public from 8-10PM.

Conspirator Andy Singer has a show of his cartoons up in St. Paul at the Black Dog Cafe along with another excellent looking show of Minnesota poster artists, coinciding conveniently with the Republican National Convention. Here is what Andy has to say about it…

Our good friends at Puny Entertainment have a gallery show called 30% More Commercial opening at First Amendment Gallery this Saturday… here is the info:

“Best known for their animation on Emmy Nominated TV Series “Yo Gabba Gabba” and high-end interactive development; PUNY’s twenty-two artists, designers, and programmers throw shit against a wall to see what sticks. For one night only their corporate overseers allowed non-billable hours to be put towards un-artdirected art, interactive pointlessness, and animated mash-ups. On display are secret passions, resume killers, and a clear bias against race, gender, and economic backgrounds..

Is it art or a capabilities pitch? We’re not sure they know the difference. Salary DOE.”

Mark your calendars for Minneapolis’ fifth annual “24 Hour Comics Day” event. The details are as follows:
24 HOUR COMICS DAY
Saturday October 18, 2008 – Sunday October 19, 2008
10am – 10am

Bring food to share, and art materials for yourself (but know that Wet Paint will have a booth set up so you can buy all your stuff there if you want!)

To register, email your name, email address and phone number to us at mpls24hourcomicday at yahoo.com. You can also ask questions there, but we would prefer if you did it in the comments for this post, as it will hopefully answer other people with the same question!

We will be making another box set collecting comics from this year’s event. We hope all event participants will want to participate in this as well. Everyone contributing a mini-comic to the box will get a copy of the box. In previous years we have made 100 of these… this year there will be less… the number is tbd, based on the number of participants.

Help spread the word by posting/printing/emailing the fantastic poster by Kevin Cannon (who may hold the world record for most 24 hour comics drawn)! Choose from:

400 px wide (blog-friendly)
800 px wide
1600 px wide (cartoon is readable at this size)
hi-res black (good for printing)

It is hard to believe almost a year has passed since the Vegan Ninja, Eric Lappegard, left the planet. Please come and raise a drink or three to his memory with us August 9th at Grumpy’s downtown (1111 Washington Ave. S. Minneapolis, MN), and do take some time to revisit his wonderful comics. Below is an open invite from Eric’s family.

I can’t believe a year has gone by. We think about Eric everyday and have decided that we would like to have a get together with his friends to remember him. We would like to get together with as many of his friends that can make it on Saturday August 9th. We have reserved the party room at Grumpy’s downtown that evening starting at 7:30 pm. We hope that you can make it and if you know of anyone I may have missed please pass the word around. We want it to be a fun time remembering Eric and in the way that he would have enjoyed. Hope to see you there.

Jam this Thursday in Minneapolis (August 7th)

The Minneapolis Cartoonist Conspiracy meets at 6:30 until 10:00 the first Thursday of every month at Diamond’s Coffee Shoppe in Northeast.

Generally, we draw collaborative “jam” comics, socialize and drink caffeinated beverages. Afterwords, we often have uncaffeinated beverages somewhere else.

The meetings are open to anyone who wants to draw with us, and the results are posted here sooner or later (and sometimes even printed).

Please also note that the Eric Lappegard event at Grumpy’s is this Saturday!

Another great show Friday from our good friends at Altered Esthetics… the Minneapolis cell’s “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised–a Tijuana Bible” jam will be on display there, among many other things. Here is the info from Jamie at AE:

Hello friends and supporters of The Revolution Will Not Be Televised group show!

Thank you so much for all your help making this an awesome exhibit and event. We’re in the final stages of hanging and tagging the show, and WOW what a great exhibit. This is by far one of the most powerful exhibits we’ve hosted as a gallery, and we thank you so much for the part you played in this political and global statement.

A few updates and notes for you as the opening draws near:

-Opening Reception-

A reminder: the opening reception for the Revolution Will Not Be Televised exhibit is this Friday August 1! The public reception is from 7pm-10pm; the artist reception is from 6pm-7pm and everybody on this list is invited to join us for the earlier more intimate gathering. It is going to be a warm evening and we anticipate a large crowd – so dress lightly and comfortably. Note: extra parking is available in the school-district lot next to the gallery.

-Gallery Grooves-

The Rake has chosen Altered Esthetics as the location for their August “Gallery Grooves” event!

Join us on Saturday, August 16th from 1pm-3pm for an Artists’ discussion panel about the show. The curators as well as a few artist from the Revolution exhibit will facilitate the discussion and anybody is welcome to join the dialogue. Tea and snacks will be provided.
