Local Comics Week UPDATE AND CHANGES!

text

Local Comics Week is a chance to show off local and independent talent.
Other cities besides Minneapolis have organized their own events
nationwide, and have even joined forces to create Indy Comic Week
(http://www.indycomicbookweek.com/index.html) which is aiming to do what we
have all set out to do with our event.

Our event is changing a bit. The Source Comics and Games in Roseville, MN
(http://www.sourcecandg.com/) is participating in Indy Comics Week and
after a few discussions with Nick, the organizer of their event, we have
decided to join forces and allow our event to be folded into Indy Comics
Week.

What does this mean? Quite a lot, actually.

Big Brain Comics is stepping out of the event, and our comics will now be
sold at the Source. Nick is also preparing for a signing event for
participating artists.

So, here is what you need to know:

-I will no longer be collecting the comics that you would like to submit
for the event. Instead, any material (mini comics, zines, trade
paperbacks, graphic novels) must be brought to the Source between December
21 and December 26th. Mind they will likely have shorter hours on
Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas. The nice thing is that the Source
WANTS to purchase your hard worked creations. How much they will purchase
items for, quantity, etc is up to the Source.

Remember, what you bring to the Source does NOT need to be new material!

-The material will be put out on the racks on Sunday December 27th and will
remain there until January 2nd.

-Wednesday, December 30th is the BIG event. The Source will be hosting a
signing for indy cartoonists. Space IS limited. In order to be a guest at
the signing, you MUST email Nick at the Source
http://www.sourcecomicsandgames.com/?page_id=10 with “Attention Nick/Indy
Comis Week in the first line of ‘your message’ to request a spot. The
signing will be 4pm until 8pm.

-You DO NOT have to provide anything to the Source to sell in order to be a
guest at the signing.

-You DO NOT have to be a guest at the Source in order to sell them your
comics.

That’s about it. If there is anything you want to know, please email me (bob(at)uptowngirlcomic.com)

Raise a Glass to The Vegan Ninja October 24th at Grumpy’s Downtown

This is a repost/reminder… note that it is right next door to the Porcellino/Sally book release at Big Brain the same night!

October 22nd is our dear, departed comrade Eric Lappegard’s (AKA The Vegan Ninja’s) birthday… come raise a drink to him and celebrate his life at Grumpy’s October 24th. Some of Eric’s family will be there from South Dakota, and would love to see as many people as can make it, even if they can only stop by for a short time.

7pm Saturday October 24th at GRUMPY’S DOWNTOWN 1111 Washington Ave. S. Minneapolis, MN

John Porcellino Map of My Heart/Zak Sally Like a Dog Book Release Party this Saturday in Minneapolis

Zak Sally posted the following information on his blog

my very good pal John Porcellino has been on the road for the past 5 weeks, traversing our great nation in celebration of the release of his new book “MAP OF MY HEART: selected comics 1996 -2002” (Drawn & Quarterly) and not only that but GET THIS: also marking 20 YEARS OF KING-CAT.
i know, it’s crazy. so, yeah; John has been doing his zine for 20 years, and it’s pretty well agreed that King-Cat is perhaps the greatest mini comic, uh…ever. John has been HUGELY influential and i’m not even going to get into all that because i’d be up typing for another 2 hours, but it’s a big deal (in a very quiet, small way).
and John has said to me many times on the phone about the comics that make up “MAP OF MY HEART”…”they’re the best comics i’ve ever done”. and you know– they ARE. and with someone like John, and a magazine like King- Cat, that’s saying something. i’m not kidding, this is a VERY SPECIAL BOOK.
and not only that, but MY new collection of old stuff is coming out too– it’s called “LIKE A DOG”, and it’s a fancy hardcover book with a bunch of full color stuff in it, collecting the first 2 ‘zine issues of “Recidivist” as well as a bunch of other stuff i did for anthologies and whathaveyou, all decked out with extensive “liner notes”. my pals at Fantagraphics were nice enough to publish the thing, and i’ve got to say– i’m extremely proud of this book. i really am; it came out better than i could’ve possibly hoped.

so it’s a RELEASE PARTY FOR BOTH BOOKS!!! HOORAY!!!
michael’s puttin’ it on, so we’ll both be at BIG BRAIN COMICS (that’s 1027 Washington Ave S Minneapolis, MN 55415 (612) 338-4390) signing and shooting the breeze from 5 til 7:30 or so on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24.

then after that, we’re heading over to the WEST BANK SOCIAL CENTER (501 Cedar Ave. S (Second Floor) Minneapolis, MN 55454 http://westbanksocialcenter.org/)
from 8 to 10 or so, where Johhnny will give a presentation about 20 years of zinehood.

as always, short notice, but
come on down and say hi.
ok all, bye.
best, zak.

damn, i don’t have a pic of Johnny’s book, but here’s mine:
(whoops, that’s it up top there and i’m too tired to change it…)

St. Paul Cartoonist Conspiracy Jam – 2nd Anniversary! This Thursday, October 15th, 2009!

The St. Paul Cartoonist Conspiracy will turn two years old today! Originally three brave men, Bud Burgy, Kevin McCarthy, and Daniel Olson, started this tiny offshoot cell back in 2007 as an alternate jam night in the bustling metropolis of the Twin Cities. Since then, it has grown by leaps and bounds. This is a destination for St. Paulites, Minneapolitans, and suburbanites alike!

Come join the us and celebrate tonight!

Just bring some drawing utensils, an idea for the jam, and a few bucks to get a tasty beverage — the baristas really do appreciate that.

The jam will start promptly at 6:30 and run until…whenever.

FALLCON IS THIS WEEKEND!!! Volunteer to represent the Conspiracy at Fallcon!

Fallcon is this weekend!

Click the above image to go to the Fallcon website.

We have some volunteers for Fallcon this year, but we could definitely use some more. We’re planning to have a “Conspiracy lounge” again this year. Ideally, we would like a minimum of two people to be in the lounge at all times during the convention. It is a pretty casual and fun affair, and a good opportunity to get to know some of your fellow cartoonists better. We also need some comfy couches and chairs, if you can bring them. If you can volunteer or provide weekend furnishings for the lounge, please contact me at:

Thanks much!

Pinewood Derby at Pink Hobo — THIS SATURDAY!

This post stolen from Local Hero Kevin Cannon at the Big Time Attic blog… note that you can still build a car for the show and bring it to the gallery to compete on Saturday.

Pink Hobo Pinewood Derby Show

I was never in Boy Scouts as a kid, but I would have considered joining had I known that they get to sit around and race cars all day. The only thing I had was Odyssey of the Mind competitions, where we had to use teamwork and teacher supervision to build a car to solve some sort of science problem. The only problem I wanted to solve was how to kick the competition’s ASS. And I wanted to do it ALONE.

That’s why the new show at Pink Hobo Gallery is so rewarding. Twenty years out of elementary school and I finally have a legitimate excuse to build and race a car. Granted, I ended up going the artsy-fartsy route and built a car with non-functioning wheels. But the rest of the cars will be racing. And there will be cheering. And screaming. And blood. Well, maybe not blood, but there will definitely be wine.

PLACE: Pink Hobo Gallery
ADDRESS: 507 East Hennepin Ave, Mpls, MN
