St. Paul Cartoonist Conspiracy Jams – June and July 2008

For those who are “Not in the Know” every third Thursday of the month, a group of cartoonists descend upon Cosmic’s Coffee Shoppe in St. Paul, Minnesota to concoct a jam comic*. The staff at Cosmic’s have been gracious hosts despite the “uneasy tension” between the cartoonists, gamers**, and LARPers***. This last Thursday we said farewell to Kevin McCarthy; one of the three “founders” of the St. Paul cell. He is moving to Milwaukee where he will motivate, perhaps through violence, the Cream City Cell**** to post their jams.

I’ve posted our last two jam comics below for all to enjoy!

Please Note:
* jam comic – a collaborative effort to create a comic in a defined, usually short, amount of time, with few formal regulations.
** gamers in this instance refers to those generally playing World of Warcraft while we sit at the coffee shop and draw.
*** LARPers – Live Action Role Players – a group of individuals that attempt the craft of socializing by enacting various scenes and, sometimes, dressing up as characters found within a role playing game; in this instance it refers to people who think they are vampires.
**** Cream City Cell – also known as the Milwaukee Cell – who belongs to this cell? Does it even exist, or is it a myth? I’ve never seen anything posted on this site other than a cute little community link in the right sidebar. Please correct me if I am wrong.

The Lost St. Paul Conspiracy Jams

Apologies to those that this may have affected. After transferring files from my old computer to my new computer, I noticed these PDFs lying around, which I forgot to post after their creation. Therefore, I present to you, the lost St. Paul Conspiracy Jams!

February 2008

March 2008

April 2008

Special thanks to the St. Paul Conspiracy members for working so diligently on these jams, Kevin McCarthy for getting on my @$$ to get these posted, and to David Steinlicht for showing me up last week by posting within days of receiving the jam pages.

St. Paul Cartoonist Conspiracy December Jam Comic

The last St. Paul Cartoonist Conspiracy jam comic for 2007 was finished nearly three weeks ago.

Turns out that traveling during the holidays takes a lot out of a person and their desire to do anything. Thus, three weeks later, you are presented with “Krampus Returns.”

The St. Paul Cartoonist Conspiracy meets every third Thursday of the month at Cosmic’s Coffee Shoppe, which is located at the northwest corner of Snelling Ave. and Selby Ave.

Meanwhile, our crosstown rivals, the Minneapolis Cartoonist Conspiracy meet every first Thursday of the month (TOMORROW!) at Diamond’s Coffee Shoppe from 6 – 10 PM. See the following post for more details.

Image/Shadowline Super Heronie Creation Contest

Here is an opportunity/contest for writers to create a super-heronie for Image and Shadowline. The winning entry will be featured in a self-titled three issue mini-series to be drawn by fan-favorite artist, Franchesco! (She-Dragon, Green Lantern Corps Quarterly) and back-end profits will be split between the creators.

The original link can be found here, but the gist of the contest is as follows:

Round One:
Contestants e-mail a BRIEF one paragraph story synopsis by January 31,2008 to: superheroniecontest@gmail.com. Stories/concept must be original with original characters. No pre-existing characters may be used unless owned by contestant.

Round Two:
Ten semi-finalists will be chosen from all entries received by the above date and notified by e-mail. They will then be required to turn in 5 (five) fully scripted pages by February 29, 2008.

Round Three:
The five finalists will be announced and their synopses posted on Newsarama on March 10. Newsarama posters will be encouraged to vote on their favorite. (Writers are strongly advised to direct traffic to the contest via message boards, myspace, etc…every vote counts!) Polls will close on April 4, 2008.

The winner will be announced April 28 with initial concept art/character design by Franchesco. First issue will be solicited with a cover date of November 2008.

Young American Comics: What’s In The Box?

Young American Comics (YAC), an indie comic publisher who is known for its large, open-invite, group projects such as The Big Ol’ Book of BIZMAR, is taking submissions for their sixth annual open-invite project.

This year YAC asks that contributors, “write and draw a two to six page comic that involves an unopened box with mystery contents. It can be any sort of box and a part of any type of story, as long as the contents of the box remain unknown to the reader.”

St. Paul Conspiracy Cell Jam-O-Rama Report

The inaugural St. Paul Cartoonist Conspiracy Jam happened Thursday, October 18th and we have the images to prove it!

The founders of the cell – Bud Burgy (taking the picture), Kevin McCarthy (on the left), and Daniel Olson (on the right) – were the only ones to attend, but we will grow in numbers!

By clicking on the above image you will see our four page, potentially ongoing, creation: Tussles and Tights!

Inaugural St. Paul Conspiracy Cell Jam

You see, the resident Conspirators of Pig’s Eye; Kevin McCarthy, Bud Burgy, and Daniel J. Olson are lazy. We’d rather create our own cell in St. Paul that meets somewhere around the intersection of Snelling Avenue and Selby Avenue than travel ten miles to Minneapolis. In fact, we’ve done just that! EVERY THIRD THURSDAY from 6:30PM – 9:30PM we will be meeting at:

Cosmic’s Coffee
189 N. Snelling Avenue
St. Paul, MN 55104

Though highly unlikely, should the St. Paul cell swell beyond its three “framers,” the meetings will move across the street to:

O’Gara’s Bar & Grill
164 Snelling Avenue North
St. Paul, MN 55104

All cartoonists are welcome to join. Yes, that includes Minneapolitans and suburbanites. All you need to bring is your utensils, a passion for creating comics, and perhaps a few bucks for a cup o’ joe!

This first meeting is set for Thursday, OCTOBER 18, 2007, providing an ideal opportunity to start getting caffeinated for the 24-Hour Comic Challenge two days later. Unless the prospect of free pool proves too distracting, there should be a jam comic in the offing.
