1987 BBC Documentary About R. Crumb

Hello. Mike “Brain Food” Toft here. I just watched this BBC documentary about R. Crumb from 1987 that’s worth a look. Crumb wrote it himself, so I assume it’s showing him the way he wanted to be shown.

The Confessions of Robert Crumb: A Portrait Scripted by the Underground Comics Legend Himself (1987)

It’s not that much new information if you’ve seen “Crumb” (1994), but still worth checking out. This Open Culture web site looks interesting, too. You’re welcome.

Birthday Party That Is Conspiracy-related!

Join me as I, Mike Toft (AKA, one of the original members of the Cartoonist Consiracy), joyfully celebrate my birthday! I’m using e-mail and this blog to help spread the word, since I’m not on The Face-book.

Time: Saturday, March 9, from 5 pm to whenever.

Place: The glamorous side room at Grumpy’s downtown, 1111 Washington Avenue South, Minneapolis. Click here for a map. There’s a parking lot directly behind the bar. Also, it’s pretty easy to park on the street around there.

Cost: Depends on how much you eat and drink.

We can stay past 9 pm, but around 9:30 they’ll start setting up the glamorous side room for live music, which starts at 10 pm.

No gifts, please. Feel free to bring a friend. Keep in mind this is NOT a jam or open studio. It IS a chance to hang out with both Conspiracy and non-Conspiracy people. Work on your social skills with the help of beer!

Hope to see you there!

Minneapolis Saturday Open Studio, Feb. 2, noon to 4 pm

Come on down to the open studio on Saturday, February 2, at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Meet, talk, and draw with a few of your fellow cartoonists. We’ll be at the bindery (high tables).

The recently resurrected coffee shop should be open. If not, there’s a convenience store across the street. There are outlets nearby for your devices, plus coffee-shop wi-fi.

This is an open studio — all are welcome. Feel free to hang, draw, or whatever.

The Belfry Center and Bat Annex Free School Library are looking for donations to their zine library. The Belfry Center is a DIY-type place that hosts art shows, bands, and other good stuff. I’ve been there a couple of times and give the place a thumbs-up.

Artists Unite!

Artists Unite, again, on Wednesday, August 15! 7:00 to 9:00 pm at Susan Hensel Gallery, 3441 Cedar Ave S.
Put it on your calendar! On the 4th Wednesday (usually) of every month, artists from all over south Minneapolis meet at the Susan Hensel Gallery for food, fun, and conversation. This is social networking at its best. We share cool tools, jokes, artwork, complaints, and kudos. In May we awkwardly milled around meeting one another. In June we figured out that the creative combination of boxed red wine and cold watermelon was a pretty fair sangria. If we can figure this out by the second meeting, the sky is surely the limit!

(In September we return to the regular schedule of the 4th Wednesday.)
