Kirk Anderson Book talk and cartoon presentation in St. Paul Tuesday, Feb. 10, 7:30 pm

Here is a press release for an upcoming book talk and cartoon presentation by Twin Cities’ cartoonist Kirk Anderson.

“Is Your Country a Banana Republic?”
Banana Republic: Adventures in Amnesia, by Kirk Anderson
Tuesday, Feb. 10, 7:30 pm
Common Good Books
165 Western Ave N, St. Paul
(beneath Nina’s Coffee Cafe at the corner of Western and Selby)

“Is Your Country a Banana Republic?”: Local author and political cartoonist Kirk Anderson will show cartoons from his latest book, BANANA REPUBLIC: Adventures in Amnesia, discuss its timely themes and sign and illustrate books. With America’s funny little banana republic quirks like torture, rendition, surveillance, secret evidence, indefinite imprisonment without charge, an unstable currency and unsupportable foreign debt, we’re not getting rid of our banana republic ways, we’re only getting used to them — even as our republic gets used to its new top banana.

BANANA REPUBLIC is a collection of the weekly, quarter-page cartoons of the same name that ran on the Star Tribune’s opinion page for years. Come on down for a fun, provocative and irreverent presentation.

For more about the book, visit Molotov Comix Press at www.MolotovComix.com

BANANA REPUBLIC
– Adventures in Amnesia –
the small backward Third World nation
with hearts of silver and mines of gold

BANANA REPUBLIC follows the mischievous death squads and hilarious junta hijinks of Amnesia, a zany Third World dictatorship that is the polar opposite of America! In Amnesia, Generalissimo Wally engages in roughhousing practices we would consider unconstitutional in our own country, such as torture, warrentless surveillance, and imprisonment without charge! Why, even secret prisons are not unheard of! Unlike the advanced American system, the Amnesian regime only serves the wealthy elite, not the peasant classes; in fact, politicians openly take money from wealthy businessmen with direct financial
stakes in pending legislation! From the Amnesians’ overflowing prisons to their state propaganda, from their crippling foreign debt to their questionable elections, from their privately contracted paramilitaries to their millions without basic health care, you’ll be chuckling, “Thank God WE don’t live in a banana republic!”

“Kirk Anderson is an outrageously bold and talented cartoonist. [Banana Republic] entertained me hugely… a hilarious education in recent history.” – Howard Zinn, historian and author of A People’s History of the United States

St. Paul Cartoonist Conspiracy’s January 2009 Jam!

Good God has it been cold up here! We had been hovering around the minus 20 degree mark all this week and cartoonist STILL showed up to the jam! More than the signature page would have you believe as well! So, what’s keeping you from showing up to the next one?

Is it our long standing feud with the LARPers? Don’t worry. We have a truce. Is it because you have better things to do? Like what? I doubt there is anything better to do than to travel to St. Paul and create a jam comic. So, quit kidding yourself and show up to the next one!

If you’d like to participate in the next St. Paul jam, just show up on Thursday, February 19th, 2009 to Cosmic’s Coffee! Bring yourself and bring your friends, by force if you have to! Some cartoonists forced there friends to show up last time! What’s stopping you?

Want to see what we do while at the jams? Click on the image towards the bottom of this post to view our latest creation!

With President elect Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony this Tuesday, we decided to pay tribute to this historic event. Also, there is a guest appearance by your favorite neighborhood web slinger!

Check it out!

St. Paul Cartoonist Conspiracy December 2008!

We were all tired of the holidays. We were all tired of the cold? Also, we were all tired of the pressure to consume? Thus, a record number of participants descended upon Cosmics Coffee to create “The Return of Krampus 2008!” However, Steve Stwalley suggested that it had something to do with my bitching last month about nobody showing up to the jam. Perhaps that’s the case, who knows?

If you’d like to participate in the next St. Paul jam, just show up on Thursday, January 15th, 2009 to Cosmic’s Coffee! Bring yourself and bring your friends, by force if you have to!

Want to see what we do while at the jams? Click on the image towards the bottom of this post to view our latest creation!

As with every Christmas at the St. Paul cell, Krampus graced us with his presence. Want to see last year’s Krampus offering? Click here. Don’t know what Krampus is? Click here.

St. Paul Cartoonist Conspiracy Jam! This Thursday, December 18th, 2008!

Tired of the holidays yet? The cold? The pressure to consume? Me too. Come join the St. Paul cell of the Cartoonist Conspiracy and Krampus this Thursday and blow off some steam! Just bring some drawing utensils, an idea for the jam, and although I already complained about pressuring consumption, please bring along a few bucks to get a tasty beverage — the baristas really do appreciate that.

The jam will start promptly at 6:30 and run until…whenever.
