The Wayne Gale Variety Hour #25: PARANORMAL ANNIVERSARY

wg25

DANNO KLONOWSKI is a cartoonist, writer for THE DAILY ROTATION, and podcaster. MATT  RISNES is a noted film blogger and podcast guest. They have been friends for nearly 20 years and like talking about stuff at length and in-depth AND IT’S THEIR 25th EPISODE!!!

FIRST OF ALL: Thank you, thank you, thank you to anyone and everyone who has listened to one or all of the 25 episodes of THE WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR over the last nine months or so. Matt and Danno really appreciate you listening to our thoughts and ramblings and hope you continue to enjoy for (being presumptuous here) another twenty-five! And muchos thanks to everyone who has written in to the comments section. We love your feedback! Keep it coming!

SPECIFICALLY: This episode we asked for AUDIO VIEWER MAIL and you guys did not disappoint! We did our best to dedicate this episode to you lovely listeners and thank JOHN SMALLBERRIES, RAFE GUTTMAN, and ANDY LUNN for taking their time and effort to send in some mp3 kudos, thoughts, and general viewer awesomeness. Also, first-time Viewer Mailer ANDY SWART keeps it soapy and clean with some classic written script. Seriously, he sent it written on parchment with a feather-ended quill-dip pen, the Mook.

AFTER THE BREAK: We have a few UNO HITTRES (this is how we’ve outsmarted PROFONDO CINEMA by stealing their ONE HITTERS bit), and then it’s into the PARANORMAL ANNIVERSARY!!! Since we don’t care about 9/11 or the several wars we are fighting anymore, horror has lost it’s perspective and just resorted to jump-scare trickery–specifically and repeatedly with Possession and Ghost films. Matt and Danno examine this paranormal phenomenon, decide what they like and what they despise, and even share a few paranormal tales of their own!!!

Thanks for listening!!!

The Wayne Gale Variety Hour ep 24: DANNO’s KUBRICK HOMEWORK

WG24

DANNO KLONOWSKI is a cartoonist, writer for THE DAILY ROTATION, and podcaster. MATT  RISNES is a noted film blogger and podcast guest. They have been friends for nearly 20 years and like talking about stuff at length and in-depth.  In the 24th episode of the WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR we break down the works of four specific STANLEY KUBRICK films.

BUT FIRST:  We open with some viewer mail, including an AUDIO Viewer Mail by J SCOTT of PROFONDO CINEMA (and we’d love more AUDIO Viewer Mail for ep 25 in two weeks), a quick thought/link on the the difference between scripted and improv films by DAVID STEINLICHT (see the comments for ep 24 for the great Peter Jackson/Simon Pegg/Edgar Wright link he mentions), and some thoughts on ep 24 by first-time listener JEREMY ZOSS.

THEN: Some ONE HITTERS including: the passing of DENNIS FARINA, Danno and Matt taking on PACIFIC RIM: round 2, ONLY GOD FORGIVES (and Matt’s general distaste for high-def V.O.D.), the British comedy series PEEP SHOW, Ken Burns “PROHIBITION”, the announced SUPERMAN follow-up featuring BATMAN, Matt’s theory on when the death of big-budget cinema will occur (sooner than you might think), the VERONICA MARS vs SPIKE LEE Kickstarters, and Matt takes on THE WOLVERINE.

FINALLY:  We get into DANNO’s KUBRICK HOMEWORK: Paths of Glory, Spartacus, Barry Lyndon, and Lolita, as well a general overview of Kubrick’s career. Many thanks to ANDY LUNN and RAFE GAUTTMAN for their thoughts on Danno’s Kubrick Homework!

The WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR ep 23: 9/11 time ONE MILLION!!!

wg23

DANNO KLONOWSKI is a cartoonist, writer for THE DAILY ROTATION, and podcaster. MATT  RISNES is a noted film blogger and podcast guest. They have been friends for nearly 20 years and like talking about stuff at length and in-depth.  In the 23rd episode of the WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR we discuss THE SUMMER OF 9/11, 2013!  Every major blockbuster has had 9/11 overtones and America’s response seems to be they are SOOO over it. Are they? Should they be? Matt and Danno tie this all into their SPOILER-IFFIC review of PACIFIC RIM!

BUT FIRST:  We open with some COLLER CATCHES UP Viewer Mail, followed by new business from JOHN SMALLBERRIES about Disney, and ANDY LUNN about football, The Lovely Joanne, Silence of the Lambs, and much more!  Once again thanks to everyone who writes in!

THEN:  Matt has some eye opening revelations (courtesy of Danno, no less) about how to deal with the internet and how to use the Library! We also our love of the recent minted THEDISSOLVE.COM (seriously, go check it out!) Danno then tells tales of seeing films with family: First, Danno’s father travels back and time at THE LONE RANGER, and then Danno gives a short review of THIS IS THE END, which he saw with his nigh-on 17 year old daughter, who is a sarcasmo and loved the film. Did Danno?!?! Find out!

FINALLY:  The summer of films 2013 aka THE SUMMER OF 9/11 and PACIFIC RIM reviewed!

The WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR ep 22: War Films (and The Lone Ranger)

wg22

DANNO KLONOWSKI is a cartoonist, reviewer for THE DAILY ROTATION, and podcaster. MATT  RISNES is a noted film blogger and podcast guest. They have been friends for nearly 20 years and like talking about stuff at length and in-depth.  In the 22nd episode of the WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR we discuss our favorite WAR FILMS, as well as have a SPOILER-IFFIC chat about THE LONE RANGER (TLR discussion goes from roughly 46:00-1:10:00 if you want to avoid said spoilers).

BUT FIRST: We open with some VIEWER MAIL from our old friend COLLER who continues to “Catch Up”.  Coller also put his two cents in about the last episode (while Matt becomes unstuck in time reading his mail), as does ANDY LUNN, who evidently watches the Super Bowl even though he lives in England. Who knew?!  Finally, 3rd host RAFE GUTTMAN sends along his thoughts on MAN OF STEEL, closing the book on that films place in cinematic history forever. FOREVER!!!

NEXT: Matt and Danno debate what has become of film criticism what with the democratization of the internet and all. Matt ponders hard on whether or not he wants to remain a part of the online film community and the generation of grown children who have weaseled their way into taste-maker status, while Danno tries to figure out what the hell the difference between a critic, reviewer, and a blogger is.

THEN: We do some One-Hitters on Kanye West’s new album, documentaries Johnny Carson, Ralph Nader, Hiroshima, and Soderbergh’s CHE, which eventually leads into the RANGER talk.

FINALLY…It’s WAR!!!   Or at least films about them, including: ENEMY AT THE GATES, GONE WITH THE WIND, PLATOON, KELLY’S HEROES, APOCALYPSE NOW, STARSHIP TROOPERS, TORA! TORA! TORA!, PATHS OF GLORY and CATCH-22.  Enjoy!

The WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR ep 21: Our Top 5 Coen Films

But first, we bust into some Viewer Mail (Thanks Coller and Andy Lunn…and the lovely Joanne!), followed by many a One Hitter including: This weeks Jim Carrey/KICK-ASS 2 gun violence debacle, WORLD WAR Z (the magic of GEORGE ROMERO’s contribution to Zombie Lore, as well as National Geographic’s THE TRUTH BEHIND ZOMBIES “documentry” and WWZ author and “Zombie Expert” MAX BROOKS), JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, Alan Moore’s SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING (Matt actually read it!), the passing of JAMES GANDOLPHINI, AUSCHWITZ: INSIDE THE NAZI STATE, TALES FROM THE SCRIPT, ALL-STAR SUPERMAN, JOHN HODGMAN: RAGNAROK, ESCAPE FROM LA and PRINCE OF DARKNESS.

After the break it’s on to our discussion of both Danno and Matt’s TOP 5 FAVORITE COEN BROTHERS films! Minnesotans film fans talking films by Minnesotans! What more could you ask for?! Enjoy!

wg20

DANNO KLONOWSKI is a cartoonist, film reviewer for THE DAILY ROTATION, and podcaster. MATT  RISNES is a noted film blogger and podcast guest. They have been friends for nearly 20 years and like talking about stuff at length and in-depth.  In the 20th episode of the WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR we discuss our feelings/thoughts on the MAN OF STEEL.

But first, some ONE HITTERS on: Alan Moore’s SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING. Danno’s thoughts on the first two STAR TREK FILMS, JACK REACHER, and OBLIVION. Matt pipes in about THE PURGE, AFTER EARTH, and KAYNE WEST. We wrap-up with thoughts on WORLD TRADE CENTER and OLIVER STONE, and the horrible decline of SASHA BARON COHEN.  Then it’s on to some VIEWER MAIL. Thanks to RYAN COLLER, ANDY LUNN, and RAFE GUTTMAN for their thoughts.

After the (quick) break Matt and Danno get into a SPOLIER-IFFIC review over MAN OF STEEL for about an hour. Matt is pro. Danno is KHAAAAANNNNN!!! (Well, it’s not that black and white). So for an hour-filled of SPOILERS of MAN OF STEEL keep on a’listenin’!

The WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR ep 18: a FAST 6 quickie

wg18

DANNO KLONOWSKI is a cartoonist and podcaster. MATT  RISNES is a noted film blogger and podcast guest. They have been friends for nearly 20 years and like talking about stuff at length and in-depth.  In the eighteenth episode of the WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR we find our heroes, in a infrequent turn, actually being able to see a film together and then podcast about after. Unfortunately the film we saw was FAST 6 (or FURIOUS 6 or whatever it’s called).  We didn’t have to time to do a full episode, this is just a 40 minute quickie on said film. And even though this is the Wayne Gale Variety HOUR and is only 40 minutes, we’ll still be billing your insurance for a full session.

The WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR ep 17: TREK TALK!!! (or “Matt’s Nerd Side Goes Into Darkness”)

wg17

DANNO KLONOWSKI is a cartoonist and podcaster. MATT  RISNES is a noted film blogger and podcast guest. They have been, and always shall be, friends for nearly 20 years and like talking about stuff at length and in-depth as they live long and prosper.  In the seventeenth episode of the WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR Matt, by some miracle brought on by the INTO DARKNESS debacle, has finally watched, embraced, and fallen in love with the original STAR TREK casts’ 6 films (something Danno did 27 years ago). That’s right listeners: this episode is hard sci-fi TREK TALK!!!

BUT FIRST! We address a Viewer Mail and plug Danno’s return to doing the LUTEFISK SUSHI PODCAST in addition to the WGVH cast. Then it’s onto One Hitters, including: Matt pushing the DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN album “One of Us is the Killer”, JACK REACHER, the new WOLVERINE and RIDDICK trailers, DARKMAN (and the Sam Raimi Experience), discussing the death of 3D, THE GREAT GATSBY (which Danno endured), THE PROPHETS OF SCIENCE FICTION on Netflix, RIDLEY SCOTT,  and finally our insane  wanting for MAN OF STEEL to come out RIGHT NOW, DAMMIT!!!

After a musical break by your friend and mine, The SHAT, it’s straight into SPOILER-IFFIC talk about STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS (if you want to skip spoilers they run from 52:15 to 1:37:0. That’s right! Nearly 45 minutes on INTO DARKNESS, 20 minutes of which are Danno Nerd-Raging and Matt barely getting a word in edge-wise, if you can believe that! Danno also often brings up the Butterfly Effect of JJ Abrams ST universe, but after two Sierra Nevada Torpedos can’t pronounce ‘butterfly’ and just refers to it as a ‘Kutchner Effect‘. Also during the rest of the ST chat random STID spoilers are just thrown out there without warning. Just FYI.). After that we discuss the Original Casts’ first six STAR TREK films and Danno schools Matt a bit on the history of the Trek universe and making of the films. Finally–again by some MIRACLE!!!thanks to these films Matt has finally embraced the Gene Roddenberry/Carl Sagan dream for all humanity. Kirk Out.

The WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR ep 16: The Summer 2013 Movie Preview

wg16

DANNO KLONOWSKI is a cartoonist and podcaster. MATT  RISNES is a noted film blogger and podcast guest. They have been friends for nearly 20 years and like talking about stuff at length and in-depth.  In the sixteenth episode, along with some thoughts by listener ANDY LUNN, Matt and Danno give their thoughts and predictions on the already upon-us SUMMER OF FILM 2013!!!

But right off the bat we open with some Viewer Mail, including a show suggestion we WILL do by MARK CARROLL, along with his accurate theory on THE LORDS OF SALEM, and then more TLOS talk by 3rd host RAFE GUTTMAN, which of course will blow your mind– oh, and we discussed TLOS at length last episode, so that’s what’s that’s all about.

Then it’s onto One-Hitters: Matt did a bit of his own homework at Danno’s bequest and watched the streaming-on-Netflix-so-you-can-decide-for-yourself about their split call on IRON SKY (to answer Matt’s  question of “WHO IS THIS MOVIE FOR?” Answer: Danno). Matt re-evaluates DJANGO UNCHAINED and reviews PAIN & GAIN. Then Danno, having not seen UNFORGIVEN since he was a snot-nosed teen and THE DEVILS REJECTS since its opening day–and DETESTED them both!!!–reevaluates them years later which leads into a chat about Mr. Eastwood. Then we have a vehement chat about Zack Braff’s KICKSTARTER, and finally, with less much less enthusiasm, we discuss a few other things.

After the best break song ever, Danno and Matt bust into: THE SUMMER 2013 MOVIE PREVIEW!!! After a SPOILER-IFFIC discussion of IRON MAN 3 (which runs from about 54:00 to about 1:22:00  if you want to skip–that’s right, 30 minutes on IRON MAN 3!!!), Matt breaks down the summer films by release date, whereas Danno had gone to the trouble of ranking summer films. Either way, lots of films are discussed, including: WORLD WAR Z, THE WORLD’S END, THE LONE RANGER, PACIFIC RIM, ELYSIUM, MAN OF STEEL, STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS, FAST 6, KICK-ASS 2, THE WOLVERINE, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, RIDDICK, ALAN PARTRIDGE IS IN ALPHA PAPA, and many, many, many more.

They have been friends for nearly 20 years and like talking about stuff at length and in-depth.  In the fifteenth episode, along with some thoughts by listeners RAFE GUTTMAN and ANDY LUNN, your hosts tackle DANNO’S HORROR HOMEWORK: Where Danno watched for the first time GRAVEYARD SHIFT, PHANTASM 2, FROM BEYOND, and Rob Zombie’s HALLOWEEN 1 & 2.

BUT FIRST! We open with some grousing about our unpaid second jobs as Internet Content Providers. Also: loudly discussing hot-button political issues of the day in public places and why that’s probably a bad idea. We then move onto the recent film releases THE LORDS OF SALEM, and OBLIVION, as well as the HANNIBAL TV series, our thoughts on some recent trailers and some other junk. Then it’s onto the HORROR HOMEWORK! Enjoy!

(Oh…and about the IRON SKY poster in the picture above: Danno meant to bring it up in One-Hitters but forgot. Luckily this gives Matt time to watch it too for a discussion in the next episode! How’s that for a cliffhanger?!?!)

The WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR ep 14: “Guillermo’s Puppy Party!!!”

wg14

DANNO KLONOWSKI is a cartoonist and podcaster. MATT  RISNES is a noted film blogger and podcast guest. They have been friends for nearly 20 years and like talking about stuff at length and in-depth.  In the fourteenth episode, we delve into a discussion of The films of GUILLERMO Del TORO!!!

But first, we open with some special announcements: Including Matt’s week long dissection of the films of and an interview with ROB ZOMBIE on his  ROPES OF SILICON feature ”FORAGING FOR SUBTEXTDanno’s new comic, and of course a reminder about next episodes DANNO’s HORROR HOMEWORK in which Danno watches 5 horror films he’s never seen, then Matt (who knows all the film intimately) and Danno will discuss the films at length–AND WE’D LOVE YOU THE VIEWER TO PLAY ALONG! So if you are a fan of, or have never seen but will watch in time, any of the 5 following films, please write in and leave us your thoughts about them and we will read your commentary on the show: GRAVEYARD SHIFT, FROM BEYOND, PHANTASM II, and Rob Zombie’s HALLOWEEN and HALLOWEEN II. We hope to hear from lots of you on WGVH ep 15: DANNO’s HORROR HOMEWORK.

Then it’s on to Viewer Mail, including a dissection of KILLING THEM SOFTLY by unofficial 3rd host @RafeGuttmanfollowed by some One-Hitters including: BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING. DOUBLE TAKE, THE CAMPAIGN, Louis CK‘s latest stand-up special, THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES, UNFORGIVEN, and Danno’s refusal to watch any of the JAMES BOND films. There’s a musical break, followed by a short discussion of the Boston bombing and American psychos in general.

Finally it’s into the meat of the episode: The films of  GUILLERMO DEL TORO!!! A director we’ve been meaning to discuss at length since the inception of the show. So enjoy!

This episodes break music “BOB DYLAN’s 119th DREAM” is by THE FREEDOM FIGHTERS, who we discuss will be reuniting with ARM and GROTTO this May 31st at the TURF CLUB in St Paul. If you live in MN, you must NOT MISS this show.

THE WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR ep 13: Twitter and Ebert At the Movies

wg13

DANNO KLONOWSKI is a cartoonist and podcaster. MATT  RISNES is a noted film blogger and podcast guest. They have been friends for nearly 20 years and like talking about stuff at length and in-depth.  In thirteenth episode, the boys are back…with an agenda this time: Twitter and Ebert!

We open with some quick Viewer Mail, then Matt opens the Ebert discussion–both Twitters reaction to his death, and the fact, oh yeah– he was kinda a dick when it came to horror movies. This leads to a talk about criticism, a CRITIQUE OF CRITICISM, if you will. Including a lot of love for RED LETTER MEDIA’s “Half In The Bag” and “Best of the Worst” This is eventually followed by a talk of Matt’s fascination with WEIRD TWITTER.  We also mention JEREMY LEBENS of THE DAILY ROTATION a lot in this episode–so you should really follow his film website. Like right now.

As for the movies (and some tv)… We discuss the EVIL DEAD remake and Matt’s recent interview with ROB ZOMBIE (so look for that transcribed text of that probably next week) on Matt’s ROPES OF SILICON feature ”FORAGING FOR SUBTEXT! We discuss how the trailer for ELYSIUM blows the trailers for OBLIVION and AFTER EARTH outta the water. We vehemently defend THE HOBBIT and give our theories as to why we think it didn’t click with the masses, as well as short discussions of two of other Matt’s favorite films of 2012: THE MASTER and KILLING THEM SOFTLY. Not to mention some gab about CHAMPAGNE SAFARI, THE LAST MOGUL, DINOTASIA, CHILDREN’s HOSPITAL, THE WALKING DEAD, JURASSIC PARK and ROCKY 4. And skeletons.  …SKELETONS!!!

Finally: Episode 15 is going to be DANNO’s HORROR HOMEWORK in which Danno watches 5 horror films he’s never seen, then Matt (who knows all the film intimately) and Danno will discuss the films at length–AND WE’D LOVE YOU THE VIEWER TO PLAY ALONG!

This episodes break music “Total Recall” was performed by CEESICK, the solo side-project of CASEY ‘THE NELS’ NELSON who you may know best from his band NATIONAL BIRD, his painfully hilarious webcomic SEE BEAUTIFUL INDIANA, or that one time he was on this podcast.

The WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR ep 12: “Downtown Anoka”

wg12

DANNO KLONOWSKI is a cartoonist and podcaster. MATT  RISNES is a noted film blogger and podcast guest. They have been friends for nearly 20 years and like talking about stuff at length and in-depth.  In the twelfth episode, which was once-again thrown together at the spur-of the moment/last minute, there is no particular theme, but rather a veritable conversational hotdish following-up on some of the topics of the last episode, plus all-new content.

We open with a discussion of Matt’s trip to Arizona (our shared open disdain for Phoenix, Matt visiting the “Old Tuscon’ film studio–3 AMIGOS fans rejoice!–and much more), and then move onto viewer mail. We re-open the can of worms that is G.I.JOE: RETALIATION, have a short talk about the modern (pointless?) career of BRUCE WILLIS, Matt vents about “Pixar Dorks“, Danno and Matt have a in-depth discussion about seasons 1 & 2 of GAME OF THRONES, and then we take a break.

After the break we return with Matt leading a rant on FRANCO vs FRANCO in which Matt gives a blow-by-blow SPOLIER-IFFIC talk about “SPRING BREAKERS“, we get Danno’s thoughts on Matt’s loaning him also THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2, the boys discuss season 5 of MAD MEN (which just hit Netflix and Danno consumed in 3 days), and finally end on the genius of STEVE COOGAN’s “SAXONDALE”.

Oh! And Matt just interviewed ROB ZOMBIE, so look for that transcribed interview soon on Matt’s ROPES OF SILICON feature “FORAGING FOR SUBTEXT!

This episodes break music “What I Will Do” was performed by CEESICK, the solo side-project of CASEY ‘THE NELS’ NELSON who you may know best from his band NATIONAL BIRD, his painfully hilarious webcomic SEE BEAUTIFUL INDIANA, or that one time he was on this podcast.

The WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR ep 10: w/ special guest host ADAM HANSEN

wg10

Due to an abundance of life stuff getting in the way, regular WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR co-host MATT RISNES couldn’t make it this time, so host DANNO KLONOWSKI invited hard-core film devotee, comic book writer and fan, but most importantly, friend, ADAM HANSEN onto the program.

The show opens with an extensive viewer mail segment, including mail from one Mr. ADAM HANSEN in retort to last episodes POP-CULTURE CLASH, most  specifically his thoughts on our thoughts on BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN and ZACK SNYDER.

We launch into some one-hitters (sorry, PROFONDO) on KILL LIST, DEAD ALIVE, THIEF, and BRISCO COUNTY JR. We discuss the (farce that is) Oscars, specifically Danno’s take on ARGO(fuck yourself, indeed!). Then Adam is drilled about his experiences attending a couple FANTASTIC FESTs at the famed ALAMO DRAFT HOUSE in Austin, Texas…a place Adam and his soon-to-be wife Sarah Morean will be moving too in a year or two. THAT’S how committed he is to films!!! Adam talks about some films he’s saw down there last fall like: SLEEP TIGHT, PERBERION SOUND STUDIO, SIGHT SEERS, ROOM 237, as well as seeing the world premiere of CLOUD ATLAS with the Wachowskis present. Finally we round out the show with a quick talk about the good-old days of SHINDERS. But what kind of a host would I be if I let Adam get away without answering the GREAT Bernard Pivot’s 10 questions???!!!

DANNO KLONOWSKI is a cartoonist and podcaster. MATT  RISNES is a noted film blogger and podcast guest. They have been friends for nearly 20 years and like talking about stuff at length and in-depth. In the ninth episode they open with some thoughts on Netflix’s HOUSE OF CARDS, podcasting while under the weather, UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: DAY OF RECKONING, and some viewer mail. Then our hosts present their cases for some POP-CULTURE CLASHES: Pop culture the rest of the world enjoys that Matt and Danno despise, as well as pop culture our hosts love that most find tripe. (Note: Danno and Matt don’t necessarily agree on these clashes either)

In the STUFF WE DISLIKE THAT YOU LOVE  is: Ridley Scott, the stars of young Hollywood, Steven Soderbergh, Danny Boyle, The Judd Apatow family, the Marvel film franchise, AC/DC, Punk Rock, Frank Ocean, Prince, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, and more.

In the STUFF WE LOVE YOU PROBABLY THINK IS GARBAGE is: SUCKER PUNCH, JASON X, The NIGHT FLIER, ALIEN: RESURRECTION, The CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK, TERMINATOR 3, and more. Finally, we’re joined by Friend of the Show @RAFEGUTTMAN via email on his thoughts on the much maligned THE MANGLER.

The WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR ep 7: ‘We Need to Have a Talk About Frank’

wg40

DANNO KLONOWSKI is a cartoonist and podcaster MATT RISNES is a noted film blogger and podcast guest. They have been friends for nearly 20 years and like talking about stuff at length and in-depth. The seventh episode opens with listener mail and a discussion of Matt’s recent obsession, the film BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW (which you can see streaming on Netflix). Then it’s on to the topic at hand: FRANK MILLER!!!

FRANK MILLER, for the uninitiated, is the cartoonist responsible forever changing the direction of DAREDEVIL and BATMAN. He also created a couple series you may have heard of called SIN CITY and 300, which he went onto ‘co-direct’ and produce, respectively. Frank’s also the writer of ROBOCOP 2 and 3, the writer/director of the reviled THE SPIRIT, and the creator of the equally reviled graphic novel HOLY TERROR.

Danno and Matt have a lively and philosophical talk about Frank and are even joined last minute via email by Friend of the Show @RafeGuttman, who has even posted this video review of BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW, drawing the show full-circle.

The WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR ep 6: 2012 (the year in review)

wg39

DANNO KLONOWSKI is a cartoonist and podcaster. MATT RISNES is a noted film blogger and podcast guest. They have been friends for nearly 20 years and like talking about stuff at length and in-depth. The sixth episode is a Year in Review of 2012. Of course we discuss our favorite films and television of 2012, but we also discuss what the year 2012 meant to us personally as we journeyed thru life. Bigger social issues such as the several mass shootings, gun control, our politically divided country, Matt and Danno being reviled for hating LOOPER (and how it led Matt to walk away from the internet conversation), and the perpetual lack of a Ragnarok are discussed in ranting detail.  Plus: An Ode to 2012 poem by Friend of the Show @RafeGuttman !!!
