The Lutefisk Sushi Podcast season 2, ep 26: MATT CHIC (round 2)

egyptian shumba

AND WELCOME BACK TO THE LUTEFISK SUSHI PODCAST!!!

After doing only one episode in the past 365 days, this is the first episode of what I’m hoping will be the returning and reoccurring LUTEFISK SUSHI PODCAST! (There will still be the WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR too, so worry not, loyal listeners!) I’m so hoping to get back on this Sushi train that I am officially dubbing this the start of SEASON 2 of the LUTEFISK SUSHI PODCAST, ergo new theme music, new episodes, and same old great content!

So, we open season 2 essential where we left off a year ago with host DANNO KLONOWSKI speaking ONCE AGAIN with Milwaukee cartoonist  MATT CHIC. Unlike LAST YEARS 2.5hrs of drunk rambling, we stay focused and under an hour this time and mostly discuss the creative process behind Chic’s 200+pg graphic novel EGPYTIAN SHUMBA (which a year ago was a penciled but just barely inked baby, but is now already in it’s 3rd printing!), and what both our processes are in tackling projects this large. We also discuss the bullshit of juried comic shows, we cry foul on people who table conventions but only sell prints of characters they didn’t create, why HIGH FIDELITY is a great film but probably shouldn’t be watched in certain emotionally vulnerable states lest it cut too deep, and much more!

WELCOME BACK!!!

The WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR ep 16: The Summer 2013 Movie Preview

wg16

DANNO KLONOWSKI is a cartoonist and podcaster. MATT  RISNES is a noted film blogger and podcast guest. They have been friends for nearly 20 years and like talking about stuff at length and in-depth.  In the sixteenth episode, along with some thoughts by listener ANDY LUNN, Matt and Danno give their thoughts and predictions on the already upon-us SUMMER OF FILM 2013!!!

But right off the bat we open with some Viewer Mail, including a show suggestion we WILL do by MARK CARROLL, along with his accurate theory on THE LORDS OF SALEM, and then more TLOS talk by 3rd host RAFE GUTTMAN, which of course will blow your mind– oh, and we discussed TLOS at length last episode, so that’s what’s that’s all about.

Then it’s onto One-Hitters: Matt did a bit of his own homework at Danno’s bequest and watched the streaming-on-Netflix-so-you-can-decide-for-yourself about their split call on IRON SKY (to answer Matt’s  question of “WHO IS THIS MOVIE FOR?” Answer: Danno). Matt re-evaluates DJANGO UNCHAINED and reviews PAIN & GAIN. Then Danno, having not seen UNFORGIVEN since he was a snot-nosed teen and THE DEVILS REJECTS since its opening day–and DETESTED them both!!!–reevaluates them years later which leads into a chat about Mr. Eastwood. Then we have a vehement chat about Zack Braff’s KICKSTARTER, and finally, with less much less enthusiasm, we discuss a few other things.

After the best break song ever, Danno and Matt bust into: THE SUMMER 2013 MOVIE PREVIEW!!! After a SPOILER-IFFIC discussion of IRON MAN 3 (which runs from about 54:00 to about 1:22:00  if you want to skip–that’s right, 30 minutes on IRON MAN 3!!!), Matt breaks down the summer films by release date, whereas Danno had gone to the trouble of ranking summer films. Either way, lots of films are discussed, including: WORLD WAR Z, THE WORLD’S END, THE LONE RANGER, PACIFIC RIM, ELYSIUM, MAN OF STEEL, STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS, FAST 6, KICK-ASS 2, THE WOLVERINE, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, RIDDICK, ALAN PARTRIDGE IS IN ALPHA PAPA, and many, many, many more.

The WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR ep 15: Danno’s Horror Homework

wg15,

DANNO KLONOWSKI is a cartoonist and podcaster. MATT  RISNES is a noted film blogger and podcast guest. They have been friends for nearly 20 years and like talking about stuff at length and in-depth.  In the fifteenth episode, along with some thoughts by listeners RAFE GUTTMAN and ANDY LUNN, your hosts tackle DANNO’S HORROR HOMEWORK: Where Danno watched for the first time GRAVEYARD SHIFT, PHANTASM 2, FROM BEYOND, and Rob Zombie’s HALLOWEEN 1 & 2.

BUT FIRST! We open with some grousing about our unpaid second jobs as Internet Content Providers. Also: loudly discussing hot-button political issues of the day in public places and why that’s probably a bad idea. We then move onto the recent film releases THE LORDS OF SALEM, and OBLIVION, as well as the HANNIBAL TV series, our thoughts on some recent trailers and some other junk. Then it’s onto the HORROR HOMEWORK! Enjoy!

(Oh…and about the IRON SKY poster in the picture above: Danno meant to bring it up in One-Hitters but forgot. Luckily this gives Matt time to watch it too for a discussion in the next episode! How’s that for a cliffhanger?!?!)

The WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR ep 14: “Guillermo’s Puppy Party!!!”

wg14

DANNO KLONOWSKI is a cartoonist and podcaster. MATT  RISNES is a noted film blogger and podcast guest. They have been friends for nearly 20 years and like talking about stuff at length and in-depth.  In the fourteenth episode, we delve into a discussion of The films of GUILLERMO Del TORO!!!

But first, we open with some special announcements: Including Matt’s week long dissection of the films of and an interview with ROB ZOMBIE on his  ROPES OF SILICON feature ”FORAGING FOR SUBTEXTDanno’s new comic, and of course a reminder about next episodes DANNO’s HORROR HOMEWORK in which Danno watches 5 horror films he’s never seen, then Matt (who knows all the film intimately) and Danno will discuss the films at length–AND WE’D LOVE YOU THE VIEWER TO PLAY ALONG! So if you are a fan of, or have never seen but will watch in time, any of the 5 following films, please write in and leave us your thoughts about them and we will read your commentary on the show: GRAVEYARD SHIFT, FROM BEYOND, PHANTASM II, and Rob Zombie’s HALLOWEEN and HALLOWEEN II. We hope to hear from lots of you on WGVH ep 15: DANNO’s HORROR HOMEWORK.

Then it’s on to Viewer Mail, including a dissection of KILLING THEM SOFTLY by unofficial 3rd host @RafeGuttmanfollowed by some One-Hitters including: BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING. DOUBLE TAKE, THE CAMPAIGN, Louis CK‘s latest stand-up special, THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES, UNFORGIVEN, and Danno’s refusal to watch any of the JAMES BOND films. There’s a musical break, followed by a short discussion of the Boston bombing and American psychos in general.

Finally it’s into the meat of the episode: The films of  GUILLERMO DEL TORO!!! A director we’ve been meaning to discuss at length since the inception of the show. So enjoy!

This episodes break music “BOB DYLAN’s 119th DREAM” is by THE FREEDOM FIGHTERS, who we discuss will be reuniting with ARM and GROTTO this May 31st at the TURF CLUB in St Paul. If you live in MN, you must NOT MISS this show.

THE WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR ep 13: Twitter and Ebert At the Movies

wg13

DANNO KLONOWSKI is a cartoonist and podcaster. MATT  RISNES is a noted film blogger and podcast guest. They have been friends for nearly 20 years and like talking about stuff at length and in-depth.  In thirteenth episode, the boys are back…with an agenda this time: Twitter and Ebert!

We open with some quick Viewer Mail, then Matt opens the Ebert discussion–both Twitters reaction to his death, and the fact, oh yeah– he was kinda a dick when it came to horror movies. This leads to a talk about criticism, a CRITIQUE OF CRITICISM, if you will. Including a lot of love for RED LETTER MEDIA’s “Half In The Bag” and “Best of the Worst” This is eventually followed by a talk of Matt’s fascination with WEIRD TWITTER.  We also mention JEREMY LEBENS of THE DAILY ROTATION a lot in this episode–so you should really follow his film website. Like right now.

As for the movies (and some tv)… We discuss the EVIL DEAD remake and Matt’s recent interview with ROB ZOMBIE (so look for that transcribed text of that probably next week) on Matt’s ROPES OF SILICON feature ”FORAGING FOR SUBTEXT! We discuss how the trailer for ELYSIUM blows the trailers for OBLIVION and AFTER EARTH outta the water. We vehemently defend THE HOBBIT and give our theories as to why we think it didn’t click with the masses, as well as short discussions of two of other Matt’s favorite films of 2012: THE MASTER and KILLING THEM SOFTLY. Not to mention some gab about CHAMPAGNE SAFARI, THE LAST MOGUL, DINOTASIA, CHILDREN’s HOSPITAL, THE WALKING DEAD, JURASSIC PARK and ROCKY 4. And skeletons.  …SKELETONS!!!

Finally: Episode 15 is going to be DANNO’s HORROR HOMEWORK in which Danno watches 5 horror films he’s never seen, then Matt (who knows all the film intimately) and Danno will discuss the films at length–AND WE’D LOVE YOU THE VIEWER TO PLAY ALONG!

This episodes break music “Total Recall” was performed by CEESICK, the solo side-project of CASEY ‘THE NELS’ NELSON who you may know best from his band NATIONAL BIRD, his painfully hilarious webcomic SEE BEAUTIFUL INDIANA, or that one time he was on this podcast.

The WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR ep 12: “Downtown Anoka”

wg12

DANNO KLONOWSKI is a cartoonist and podcaster. MATT  RISNES is a noted film blogger and podcast guest. They have been friends for nearly 20 years and like talking about stuff at length and in-depth.  In the twelfth episode, which was once-again thrown together at the spur-of the moment/last minute, there is no particular theme, but rather a veritable conversational hotdish following-up on some of the topics of the last episode, plus all-new content.

We open with a discussion of Matt’s trip to Arizona (our shared open disdain for Phoenix, Matt visiting the “Old Tuscon’ film studio–3 AMIGOS fans rejoice!–and much more), and then move onto viewer mail. We re-open the can of worms that is G.I.JOE: RETALIATION, have a short talk about the modern (pointless?) career of BRUCE WILLIS, Matt vents about “Pixar Dorks“, Danno and Matt have a in-depth discussion about seasons 1 & 2 of GAME OF THRONES, and then we take a break.

After the break we return with Matt leading a rant on FRANCO vs FRANCO in which Matt gives a blow-by-blow SPOLIER-IFFIC talk about “SPRING BREAKERS“, we get Danno’s thoughts on Matt’s loaning him also THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2, the boys discuss season 5 of MAD MEN (which just hit Netflix and Danno consumed in 3 days), and finally end on the genius of STEVE COOGAN’s “SAXONDALE”.

Oh! And Matt just interviewed ROB ZOMBIE, so look for that transcribed interview soon on Matt’s ROPES OF SILICON feature ”FORAGING FOR SUBTEXT!

This episodes break music “What I Will Do” was performed by CEESICK, the solo side-project of CASEY ‘THE NELS’ NELSON who you may know best from his band NATIONAL BIRD, his painfully hilarious webcomic SEE BEAUTIFUL INDIANA, or that one time he was on this podcast.

The WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR ep 11: Live From SXSW!!!

wg11

DANNO KLONOWSKI is a cartoonist and podcaster. MATT  RISNES is a noted film blogger and podcast guest. They have been friends for nearly 20 years and like talking about stuff at length and in-depth.  In the eleventh episode, which was thrown together at the spur-of the moment/last minute, there is no particular theme, but rather a veritable conversational hotdish.

We discuss what Matt has been up to (why he wasn’t on the last episode). Things like: getting a new house, a new puppy, a new name for blog, a new feature called FORAGING FOR SUBTEXT on the ROPE OF SILICON film website (which also features the BRAD AND LAREMY podcast Matt insists everyone checks out–including Danno. Which he will!),  and finding himself a changed man with a new outlook on internet life and his new internet persona named… MATT RISNES.

We then move on to viewer mail…but there was none. SAD FACE! So instead Matt retorts last episode’s guest host ADAM HANSEN‘s verbal viewer mail on the subject of ZACK SNYDER. (Again with the Zack Snyder! Oi!)  Matt also gives his closing thoughts on BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, and then we discuss a little something called taste.

Then it’s off to discussing THE MANGLER and the declining years of Tobe Hooper‘s film career, THE DEPARTED and the declining years of Marty Scorsese‘s film career, the documentary SIDE-BY-SIDE and the declining years of film used to make films, and G.I.JOE: RETALIATION and the declining years of toy adaptation films. Finally, we discuss KICKSTARTER (specifically the recent VERONICA MARS Kickstarter campaign), and what a scary, terrible, awful things it could mean for the film industry itself in the coming years. So to balance out that horror, we discuss our happy and positive hopes and dreams for what the future of film industry could and should be.

This episodes break music “How To Live Alone” was performed by CEESICK, the solo side-project of CASEY ‘THE NELS’ NELSON who you may know best from his band NATIONAL BIRD, his painfully hilarious webcomic SEE BEAUTIFUL INDIANA, or that one time he was on this podcast.

The WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR ep 10: w/ special guest host ADAM HANSEN

wg10

Due to an abundance of life stuff getting in the way, regular WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR co-host MATT RISNES couldn’t make it this time, so host DANNO KLONOWSKI invited hard-core film devotee, comic book writer and fan, but most importantly, friend, ADAM HANSEN onto the program.

The show opens with an extensive viewer mail segment, including mail from one Mr. ADAM HANSEN in retort to last episodes POP-CULTURE CLASH, most  specifically his thoughts on our thoughts on BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN and ZACK SNYDER.

We launch into some one-hitters (sorry, PROFONDO) on KILL LIST, DEAD ALIVE, THIEF, and BRISCO COUNTY JR. We discuss the (farce that is) Oscars, specifically Danno’s take on ARGO(fuck yourself, indeed!). Then Adam is drilled about his experiences attending a couple FANTASTIC FESTs at the famed ALAMO DRAFT HOUSE in Austin, Texas…a place Adam and his soon-to-be wife Sarah Morean will be moving too in a year or two. THAT’S how committed he is to films!!! Adam talks about some films he’s saw down there last fall like: SLEEP TIGHT, PERBERION SOUND STUDIO, SIGHT SEERS, ROOM 237, as well as seeing the world premiere of CLOUD ATLAS with the Wachowskis present. Finally we round out the show with a quick talk about the good-old days of SHINDERS. But what kind of a host would I be if I let Adam get away without answering the GREAT Bernard Pivot’s 10 questions???!!!

The WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR ep 9: POP-CULTURE CLASH!!!

wg9

DANNO KLONOWSKI is a cartoonist and podcaster. MATT  RISNES is a noted film blogger and podcast guest. They have been friends for nearly 20 years and like talking about stuff at length and in-depth. In the ninth episode they open with some thoughts on Netflix’s HOUSE OF CARDS, podcasting while under the weather, UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: DAY OF RECKONING, and some viewer mail. Then our hosts present their cases for some POP-CULTURE CLASHES: Pop culture the rest of the world enjoys that Matt and Danno despise, as well as pop culture our hosts love that most find tripe. (Note: Danno and Matt don’t necessarily agree on these clashes either)

In the STUFF WE DISLIKE THAT YOU LOVE  is: Ridley Scott, the stars of young Hollywood, Steven Soderbergh, Danny Boyle, The Judd Apatow family, the Marvel film franchise, AC/DC, Punk Rock, Frank Ocean, Prince, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, and more.

In the STUFF WE LOVE YOU PROBABLY THINK IS GARBAGE is: SUCKER PUNCH, JASON X, The NIGHT FLIER, ALIEN: RESURRECTION, The CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK, TERMINATOR 3, and more. Finally, we’re joined by Friend of the Show @RAFEGUTTMAN via email on his thoughts on the much maligned THE MANGLER.

wg40

DANNO KLONOWSKI is a cartoonist and podcaster MATT RISNES is a noted film blogger and podcast guest. They have been friends for nearly 20 years and like talking about stuff at length and in-depth. The seventh episode opens with listener mail and a discussion of Matt’s recent obsession, the film BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW (which you can see streaming on Netflix). Then it’s on to the topic at hand: FRANK MILLER!!!

FRANK MILLER, for the uninitiated, is the cartoonist responsible forever changing the direction of DAREDEVIL and BATMAN. He also created a couple series you may have heard of called SIN CITY and 300, which he went onto ‘co-direct’ and produce, respectively. Frank’s also the writer of ROBOCOP 2 and 3, the writer/director of the reviled THE SPIRIT, and the creator of the equally reviled graphic novel HOLY TERROR.

Danno and Matt have a lively and philosophical talk about Frank and are even joined last minute via email by Friend of the Show @RafeGuttman, who has even posted this video review of BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW, drawing the show full-circle.

Bigger social issues such as the several mass shootings, gun control, our politically divided country, Matt and Danno being reviled for hating LOOPER (and how it led Matt to walk away from the internet conversation), and the perpetual lack of a Ragnarok are discussed in ranting detail.  Plus: An Ode to 2012 poem by Friend of the Show @RafeGuttman !!!

LUTEFISK SUSHI PODCAST episode 25: SHAD PETOSKY

In the 25th(!) episode of the Lutefisk Sushi Podcast host DANNO KLONOWSKI talks with SHAD PETOSKY.  By his own admission, Shad is a “Failed Cartoonist”, but Shad is ANYTHING but a failure. While his cartooning days may be dormant, he has instead co-founded BIG TIME ATTIC (with previous Sushi podcast guests ZANDER CANNON and KEVIN CANNON) from which Shad and Vincent Stall eventually spun-off their own wildly successful interactive entertainment company, PUNY ENTERTAINMENT.  Puny has done a lot of work with YO GABBA GABBA!, Target, and film work such as the opening credits for SUPER.  On top of being the President and Creative Director of PUNY, Shad came out, identifying as queer, and completely changing his personal life.  This is an amazing talk with Shad about the his painful childhood, his confusing adult years, his learning on-the-fly to run a  successful entertainment company, and now being that guy in Hollywood people actually recognize.  This talk is a MUST LISTEN!!!

LSP ep.24/ WAYNE GALE VARIETY HOUR ep.0: MATT RISNES

In the twenty-fourth episode host DANNO KLONOWSKI speaks with Matt Risnes . Despite the fact this podcast is the audio sampling of MN Cartoonists, Matt is in fact NOT a cartoonist, rather Matt is one of Danno’s oldest friends on earth.  In addition to that honor, Matt is an avid film aficionado, as well as a blogger and frequent and sought after film podcast guest who, rather than filling the internet with nerd rage, fills his blog posts and podcast appearances with eloquent logic and critical thinking about the medium of filmmaking.  That in mind, Danno and Matt spend this episode breaking down and discussing their favorite (and least favorite) film adaptations of comic books.  Matt provides the insight into the filmmaking and Danno discusses the ways in which being either faithful or disrespectful of the source material can make or break a film (depending on the film, obviously).

SPOILER ALERTS!!! If you have not seen the recent DARK KNIGHT RISES or AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (and good for you on that one), we discuss key plot points. Other films discussed include: SCOTT PILGRIM vs THE WORLD, BATMAN ’89, The HELLBOY series, the recent Marvel films including AVENGERS, THE CROW, and several more.

LUTEFISK SUSHI PODCAST episode 23: MATT CHIC

In the twenty-third episode host DANNO KLONOWSKI speaks with Milwaukee cartoonist MATT CHIC. In an ever-increasing state of drunkityness our heroes discuss Matt’s NIGHT LIGHT COMICS, the perils of mini-comics, the 200+ page graphic novel EGYPTIAN SHUMBA he’s finishing this year, his cool dad, why Milwaukee ain’t so bad (but their cartooning scene is no Minneapolis), and whether or not Stan Lee is just a misunderstood capitalist. Or something. You are about to hear two men speak from their souls about making comics and stuff.

LUTEFISK SUSHI PODCAST episode 22: Live from SPRINGCON with Justin Skarhus of 2D Cloud, Brad McGinty, Zander Cannon & Lupi McGinty

In the twenty-second episode host DANNO KLONOWSKI is joined live for a panel recorded at the recent Springcon in St Paul by JUSTIN SKARHUS of 2D CLOUD, BRAD McGINTY, and previous Sushi Podcast guests ZANDER CANNON, and LUPI McGINTY.  Unlike previous one-on-one creator talks, this episode instead gets rather meta as we discuss the very notion of comic book conventions, what it means to be indie creators tabling fandom shows, and if in this age of interwebs and kickstarters if comic cons are even a relevant outlet and necessity for getting our work to the masses. Since it was recorded live at the con in a ‘room’ made up of cloth partitions there is plenty of ambient con noise, and you, the listening audience, will feel like you were really there!  Thanks to Nick Post and the fine folks at the MCBA for making this possible!

LUTEFISK SUSHI PODCAST episode 21: MIKE TOFT

In the twenty-first episode host DANNO KLONOWSKI talks with MN cartoonist MIKE TOFT about his long-running mini-comic series BRAIN FOOD, how the 2010′s raging against the machine is more rewarding than the 1990′s raging, dating your work with timely references that are irrelevant and forgotten just months later, and (with that in mind) we review of THE AVENGERS!

LUTEFISK SUSHI PODCAST episode 20: ZANDER CANNON

In the twentieth episode host DANNO KLONOWSKI talks with MN cartoonist ZANDER CANNON in-depth about his nearly 20 year career: stealing table space at San Diego Comic Con, discovering what motivates a robot, the joys of piecing together Alan Moore’s mental set designs, and all the exclusive insider dirt on the CHAINSAW VIGILANTE you’ve been craving!

Lutefisk Sushi Podcast episode 19: Cathy Johnson

In the ninteenth episode host DANNO KLONOWSKI talks with MN cartoonist CATHY JOHNSON about her comics, illustrations, and sculptures, her thoughts on gender, why Baltimore isn’t really a deathtrap, and what’s the hottest gossip in small town America.

Lutefisk Sushi Podcast episode 18: Michael Drivas

In the eighteenth episode host DANNO KLONOWSKI talks with MICHAEL DRIVAS, owner and operator of BIG BRAIN COMICS, about the life of a comic book retailer in these modern times, why a psychology degree is either the best or most irrelevant thing to have when running a comic shop, and why he is a both a cartoonists dealer and pimp.  Also, my cat attempts to molest his face.
